SAID TO HAVE GIVEN MANY WORTHLESS CHECKS Arraignment Will Take -Place Today Before Commissioner j ' Charles Baldwin. There is a bunch of trouble ahead of Charles L, Schrocder, the man who was arrested in Provo by United States Marshal Lucian If. Smyth Thursday. Schrocder is now in tho county jail and will bo given a preliminary hearing hear-ing beforo United States Commissioner Charles Baldwin today at 1 o'clock. In all probability ho will bo bound over to tho federal grand jury. Schrocder today will bo arraigned upon the chargo of passing worthless checks on ihe Uotol Poberts at Provo for $1S.75 and Probcrt & Russell, liverymen livery-men of Provo, for $IG. "All day Friday United Slates Marshal Smyth received complaints from various parts of tho stale regarding tho passing pass-ing of worthless checks by Schrocder, who represented himself to bo a veterinary veter-inary surgeon and chemist in tho employ em-ploy of tho United States department of agriculture, and thus mado it easy to securo accommodation in tho mattor of having checks cashed. All checks wero drawn on tho Utah Savings and Trust company, where Schrocder never hud an aiwmini.. Still More Checks. Information camo to Marshal Smyth Friday that Schrocder had cashed a chock for $25 and another for $10 at Gunnison, Utah. These had been indorsed in-dorsed by leading citizens at the request re-quest of Schrocder and havo just been returned by the bank marked, "No funds." These aro not tho only complaints, com-plaints, and Marshal Smyth is of the opinion that by the fimo tho caso has passed into tho hands of tho grand jury there will be a strong string of evidence against tho man. When the government is through with Schrocder there is a strong probability that he will havo another chargo to answer an-swer to in the stato courts. Lato in October Schrocder engaged a room at tho C'ulJcn and kept it until Novcmbor 22. He was at (he hotel but a very little of tho lime, stating that his 'business" 'busi-ness" kept him out of the city in the main, but he wanted the room held for him in caso ho should find it necessary to bo in the city at any time. Ono day ho walked in and presented a check for .$'17.50 to George Pleckenslein, then day clerk, now of the Hotel Holland. San Francisco, in payment for his room. A day or two later this check, which, like the others, was drawn on tho Utah Savings Sav-ings nnd Trust conipanj. was returned with the "no funds" stamp upon it. The room was immediately taken over bv the hotel management and ever since then tho proprietors havo boon looking for Schrocder. Interviewed by Ilcywood. Friday afternoon Ben B. Hoy wood, ono of tho proprietors of tho Cullen, paid a social call to Schrocder at the county jail. Tho man was quite ill at oaso during thc interview. Ho told Mr. Heywood that it was impossible at tho present time, considering whero ho is now located, to make good tho amount ho had beaten the Cullen out of. but would do so after his release. Mr. Heywood, Hey-wood, who was formerly United States marshal, knows tho working of that department, de-partment, and ho slated to Schrocder that it would probably bo a number of years beforo he regained his freedom, as it looked to him li.ko tho rock pile at Fort Leavenworth for somo time to conic. Mr. Heywood even went further and told the nlloecd chemist that ho proposed pro-posed to push his caso in tho courts- of the state nnd in that way add a littlo to Schroeder's sojourn behind tho bnrs. Tho latter begged hard, but Mr. Hc3'-wood Hc3'-wood told liim that thcro wore today a fow too many of his kind roaming at large, and ho proposed to mako an ex-amplo ex-amplo of him. A warrant will be issued is-sued at once for tho man's arrest and as soon as tho government, has finished with Schrocder ho will bo dealt with by tho local courts. |
