Show GERMAN CHAMPION EASILY BEATS CLARKE Hardy Downing Wins Two-Mile Professional; Meyer Defeats De-feats King. Henry Mayer, the German blcyclo sprint champion, again demonstrated his ability as a match race rider by defeating defeat-ing A. J. Clarke, who Is considered tho fastest rider on tho local tracks, at Salt-air Salt-air Friday evening. Mayer won the first heat In tho slow time of 3:53 1-5, but the last two laps wore fast. Tho second heat was called off owing to a foul committed com-mitted by Clarko In catching hold of Mayer. The latter Immediately sat up, and, raising his hand, claimed the foul, which was allowed by Referee Berry. In the third heat Clarke beat out Mayer by riding him high on tho track. When Mayer dismounted he was disgusted, but said ho would fool Clarke in the next heat. In the fourth heat Clarko tried tho same tactics by taking Mayer high on tho" track, but In the sixth lap Mayer made a bluff, to go around. Clarke rode nearly to the outer edge of tho track with Mayer on the outsldo. but, quick as a flash, Mayer back- pedalled and shot down In on the pole to the lead. Ho then played with Clarko and crossed the tapo an easy winner. Eddie Mayer defeated Duke King of Ogden In two straight heats of their match race. The first heat was a mile, which Mayer won In 8.11 1-5. Mayer caught his man In the Australian pursuit raco In ono mile and threo laps in 2:56 2-5. The tcn-milo professional raco was changed to a two-mile race, In order to allow the crowd to catch the last train. Hardy Downing won tho race, beating out Wilcox by less than half a wheel.
