Ore., a guest of the Kcnyon. spent the last two days in looking over the city. Mr. Welch is returning from an extended trip to Toronto, Canada, and all the prominent cities of the East, extending from Portland. Me., to Salt Lake. He was a delegate from the lodge of his State to the annual meeting meet-ing of the Sovereign Grand Lodge I. O. O. F held in Toronto, commencing on the 37th of last September. Mr. Welch is a shrewd, staunch, ob-' serving Western business man, and in speakine of his trip to a representative of The Tribune he said: "The country abounds in prosperity even'whorc. T am well pleased with Salt Lake and the modern appearance it is assuming. The improvements coing on here now will .average up pretty well with other cities of the country of like size, with this feature in favor of Salt Lake, that hor resources arc manv fold greater than any citv to the east of her of 100,000 people or less. Salt Lake is the best laid- out city in the country. 'Portland is prospering more rapidly rapid-ly in the line of business expansion and substantial building than any cit3 of its size in this country, and is the richest citv in the United" States according to population. ''Astoria, which is fituated at the mouth of tho Columbia river, in sight of the Pacific ocean.. is a. prosperous citv of 16,000 people, and is increasing in business and population at a very rapid rate. The business transacted is fishing and fish canning aud cold storage. The income from these businesses amounts to .$400 per capita for every man. laid-out cit' in the country.' "Tho people East arc just beginning to find out the wonderful resources and advantages for making money iu this Western country, and tho tide of immigration im-migration from tho older Eastern Status and other couutries is going to be heavy for manv years to come. Such citie3 as Salt La'kc and Portland will not onl3' become known as great business busi-ness points, but renters of immense wealth, and that, too, in the not distant dis-tant future." Mr. Welch, accompanied by his wife, left for the West last evening. |
