Show I r South I 1 11 1 East Bountiful Utah March 22 1955 1935 Mr John Stahle Jr Editor of 01 the Davis County Clipper Dear Mr Editor As a newcomer to Bountiful I 1 have greatly appreciated the Iso circulars compiled complied and distributed ed by the Utah Power Light Company Being a property owner own own- er cr naturally I am keenly interested inter ested in Bountiful's future and It is my opinion that power could be purchased at a much less expensive ex cx- pensive rate rale if contracted on more than a one year basis After I investigation of ot surrounding communities communities' com corn methods of supplying power to their citizens I note that they have been able to show a great gain by contracting the wholesale services of the Utah Power and Light Company It was vas not necessary for them to float a bond and therefore they did not obligate themselves for many future years to cancel same The following sincere statement state state- ment made by the president of 01 the Utah Power Light Co last week is one which I believe every intelligent and interested citizen of Bountiful should read and weigh very carefully before casting a vote on March 29 1955 1935 I 1 quote We wish to remind every resident resi dent of Bountiful that we win supply all additional electricity Bountiful wants wants wants-at at a n cost which we are certain will be lower than if the City purchased new en en- gines Our staff of experienced engineers has made sufficient study to support this contention We make this statement with all honesty and sincerity I Earnestly yours William E. E Taylor Dear Mr Editor In last weeks week's Clipper on the front page was an article by the Bountiful Power Commission It went into detail to explain how much it would have cost to have purchased all of the electricity we used during January 1955 I 1 cant can't understand why so many words were written on this subject for it has absolutely nothing to do with the election next Tuesday Were We're going to vote only on a bond proposal to finance a new electric electric elec dee generating engine Were We're NOT NOI voting on buying all our power That has absolutely nothing nothing noth noth- ing to do with the question at issue Be that as it may the figure quoted was in error It would have cost only on the present year 1 contract our power plant has with the Utah Power Light Co And our Power Commission could have figured it exactly as asI asI asI I have done That's because Utah Power Light Co rate schedules schedules sched sched- ules are public property Sched ule No 15 applies to Bountiful and we can figure in advance what it costs to buy whatever amount of electricity we want On a year 5 contract the cost would have been for I there would be a 5 per cent dis dEs count For Fr some unexplainable reason our Power Commission has never neverseen neverseen neverseen seen fit to save the 5 per cent discount although we have been buying electricity from the Utah Power Light Co since 1948 on a year year-to-year basis Ph The e Power Commissioners' Commissioners statements mis-statements last week in your paper Irritate me as they must do hundreds of others in Boun Boun- Im I'm for buying power wholesale distributing it over our own lines and using the real not not paper paper cash cash ash profit to get things done in our town So Im I'm going to vote NO Tuesday as soon as the polls open II H. A A. A Smoot E. E 12 So Bountiful This letter is written to state the position of the Bountiful League of Women Voters In regard regard re re- gard to the forthcoming election on the question of issuing bonds to expand the Bountiful power plant and distribution system Our group is dedicated to the principle of promoting informed public opinion and in keeping with that policy and to enable the citizens to obtain factual information in formation we held a meeting at atthe atthe atthe the American Legion hall ball Thursday Thursday Thurs Thurs- day March 24 At this meeting proponents of both sides were given an opportunity to state the facts they deemed vital The league does not support either side in this election con test Individual members however how ever do haye have views and may support rt either side However any action an individual member may take does not carry the endorsement endorsement en en- of the league We do urge that each voter study the problems involved and vote on Tuesday March 29 The Bountiful League of Women Voters Editor John Jr I wonder vonder Just how carefully those who call can the power plant planta a 3 great Investment have Investigated the tile record A great Investment In wha what Surely Surety not In n a swimming pool not In good roads not in an nn adequate ade ade- quate city hall halt and auditorium I Inot not a paid fire Cire depar department ment to to lower insurance rates not an adequate ad ad- I equate sewer disposal plant present present pres pres- ent one is a health hazard and only onty third one the size required and not anywhere near adequate parks and recreational facilities no no Its It's an investment In la laan an old fashioned method of gen gen- crating power with engines requiring requiring re re- re quiring a large stockpile of spare parts Its It's an Investment which last year caused the Power Commission Com Corn mission to borrow over from your tax money in the city General Fund and Bountiful taxes are arc the highest in Davis County And now we are asked to throw good money after bad and expand exp the plant even Into a new location Its It's like building for the paSt not pest not the future It It Is the considered and sincere belief of the writer that the wisdom wisdom wis wis- dom of rejecting this needless expansion ex cx- by voting NO on the extra engine bonds will be confirmed con can firmed by all thoughtful civic and minded economy-minded tax payers It was a real tough battle to obtain a copy of the audit made In n 1954 of the plant operation I was shocked to see sec a few items completely contrary to the accepted accepted ac no- business practices Some of or these problems have been compounded over past years An analysis points out that the generating section section not not hie dis section is a drain on our funds and its it's the ing section which the city fathers fathers fath fath- ers tried to expand by ordinance without coming to the people to toge I ge get t approval to spend thousands of dollars in interest alone on a year 20 bond The power can be purchased wholesale just like they are now doing from a private business bus bus- iness mess which paid over in jn school taxes alone last year So lets let's release the extra engineer engineer engi engi- neer the city city- fathers have paid a thousand dollars donars to and let the Plant Manager run the operation as he is capable of doing Vote NO on the extra engine and lets let's see some real progress in other areas in our town That 1000 Mr Mayor would have gone a 8 long way cleaning up and repairing repair repair- ing our streets and sidewalks Shouldn't our health and welfare wel wel- fare come first before any extra engines Sincerely Dale Peak |
