The principal In tho recent 513,000 forgery of the Illinois Steel company pay checks In South Chicago Chi-cago hao been discovered. According to his own confession Loulo Longpro Is the man. Ho was arrested yesterday In tho Office of the Western Bank Note company, com-pany, where he has been employed as an engraver. Longpro claimed Innocence, but after being questioned ho confessed that ho mado the plaf from which tho checks were printed, and that ho assisted in cashing them among the South Chicago merchants. ... , Longpro's wlfo was arrested also, and was Identified by several merchants as having presented some of the pay checks. Thero art- several others under arrest, but tho police refuse to give their Identity. Longpro has been under pollco stir-vclllanco stir-vclllanco for a number of years, and when tho pay check forgery was perpetrated ho was suspected. Arrested Many Times Before. In numerous Instances he had been arrested ar-rested on suspicion of being concerned In other big forgeries, one In Jollot, which Is said to have netted $10,000. and others In cities of the East. He always escaped conviction, however. Police ofllclala from various cities. Including In-cluding Jollot and Buffalo, havo boon notilled. and will send representatives hero to try to Identify some of the gang. The swindling In South Chicago occurred oc-curred on February 10. The members of the gang appeared at places where the working men were wont to cash their checks. All tho men were attired In working work-ing men's garb, and tho checks wcro cashed without question. The storekeepers did not discover that they had been victimized until the following day. |
