Show OUT WITH SMOOTISM. The appearance of Smootism as an "excrescence" upon hierarchical despotism des-potism in Utah is like a "carbunc le" growing out of a "tumor'' to paraphrase para-phrase the somewhat inelegant but expressive ex-pressive language of the president of the Mormon church In the name of high heaven, what had I'tah done against mankind or her own citizens that she should be afflicted afflict-ed by Smootism? The i hun h tyranny w as hlstoilc, generic general, we had It with us as a part of our system of ommunity life not always operative, but always ready to be seized by the hands of an ecclesiastical Ulng and wielded absolute abso-lute We knew all about this hierarchical hie-rarchical despotism and were enduring its galling chains until such time as they could wear out or be shaken off. But Smootism was a culture Smoot likes variations, he Is the Luther Bur-bank Bur-bank of the rellglo-polltico world, he engrafts his personal ambition on Utah's peace and the fruit Is "hell 1 he engrafts Smootism on the Mormon scheme of salvation, and lo! the fruit Is very near to worldly damnation" and then some. We quote the profane words from the text books to which Apostle Smoot. In his ministerial duties, du-ties, no doubt frequently refers for the picturesque phraseology Which adorned his utterance on election day. Why should I'tah labor continuously under the burden of Smootism ? Smoot does very little for Utah In a practical way anil as a Senator he has been worse than useless Fifty thousand men have lived and died In Utah who hae done more for her welfare than has Smoot; whose lives were more unselfish, un-selfish, whose brains were stronger, and whose hearts were truer than Smoot s. Why should this man be permitted per-mitted to impose himself upon this community; to produce ruin for Utah's name throughout the Nation, to provoke pro-voke conflict at home; to retard material ma-terial development; to sec pretend- ediy as a senator for nearly two years already without having performed one slnglf- act of good for Utah that has not been more than offset by some special spe-cial damage which he has done as a Senator to our fortunes" One may answer that he has served the State well In bringing about the awful exposures of secret conditions within the Mormon chun h. That, If a benefit, was not conferred by Smoot Intentionally, In-tentionally, and he does all that he can by equivocation and attitudinizing to prevent resultant good The city and the State would forgive Joseph F Smith for one Instance of autocracy as an eccleslast oer the movements of one Qf the apostles If he would send Reed Smoot back to the farm, where he belongs, and tell him to stay there Keep him out of Salt Lake civic affairs He demoralizes everything that he touches. Get him out cif State affairs as soon as possible. He Is a bull In a china ;hop. He Is a jac kda w in peai oc k's feathers. He a professor of blunder. He Is at once the most giddy, ill-advised, blotantly-am-bltlous and damaging man that the church could have selected, or that his part iviuld have chosen, to hold at Washington the high place which he cannot fill!
