Show WANT MORE PROTECTION Canadian Manufacturers Appeal to Tariff Commission. MuNTREAL, Nov. R. Tho Canadian Government's tariff commission, which had-been visiting various parts of the Dominion. Is sitting here and has heard a large number of delegations representing represent-ing various trades and Industries, and the keynote of th ir representations was the necessity for more protection to Canadian Industries In this connection, Mr. Pater-son, Pater-son, the Minister of Customs, made the declaration to one delegation that he was in thorough sympathy with protecting Canadian industries. Cotton manufacturers requested that the duty on gray and bleached cotton goods be Increased 5 per cent Shirt and collar manufacturers complained that (heir business was not profitable because American manufacturers sold their surplus sur-plus stock so cheaply that the Canadian mills were compelled to sell too nrnr cost. They asked that the duty bo advanced to 45 per cent. Canadian cigar manufacturers asked that the duty on foreign- raw leaf be reduced re-duced from 8 to per thousand. The Montreal Piano Dealers' association said no high-grade pianos were manufactured manufac-tured In Canada, and that the present duty of '.6 per cent was oppressive. They asked for a reduction. |
