Show RACING AUTOMOBILES WILL BUHJOTHE LEFT Foreign Custom Will Be Disregarded Dis-regarded by the American Association. NEW YORK, Sept. 2. After the meeting of the racing board of the American Automobile association, Chairman R. L. Morrell being Interviewed, Inter-viewed, said; "We didn't do much on the Vandcr-bllt Vandcr-bllt race. Wc meet again on September Septem-ber 1, and then there will be some really Important news to give out. We will then decide on the rules. "We will use crude oil on the course. We will oil every week now, and tho course should be In splendid shape by October, when the trials and races will bo run. The oiling will cost about $4000." Stands for Spectators. The stand, Mr. Morrell said, would be about twice - ns large as tho one erected last year, and will seat ubout 1C00 persons. It Is also proposed to erect the stand at an angle to tho course and some distance hack, In order or-der that the occupants can see cars approaching ap-proaching a mile away without craning their necks. There was considerable discussion as to whether the races should bo run to the right or the left. The race was run last year to the right, which Is European fashion, nnd tho foreigners had suggested that It would be a good Idea to run IL the same way this year. But the committee decided de-cided to run the contest to the left. This was not done to give the American Ameri-can riders an (d vantage, but In order that the machines might take the steepest hills up grade. "There Is one hill," said Mr. Morrell, "that would prove extremely dangerous danger-ous if the race were run with the right hand to the pole." Tho starting point will be about an eighth of a, mile from Mlneola. The foreigners also wanted the courso much longer, but this was found to be out of tho question at this date. Mr. Morrell said that It was fairly certain that the elimination trial would be at 200 miles. Three Hundred Miles Is Too Far. Some of tle American candidates would prefer a 300-mlle trial race, but the board was practically unanimous that this distance was too far. Thcro will be no controls or stopping places in either the trial or the race, and tho machines In both events will be sent away at two-minute Intervals. "Will there be a French team In the race?" was asked. "You can rest assured that there will be, and a strong one, too," said Mr. Morrell, "ulthough Ave have heard nothing officially from the other side. Even if Thery and Callols do not come, there will be good drivers and fast cars representing the tri-color." Three hundred Long- Islanders sworn In as special officers are to guard tho course on the two days that It will be used. The stand will be situated Inside the course, and owing to tho numerous roads it will be possible to reach any point on the course from the grand stand In a short space of time. There are now only twelve candidates candi-dates for tho American team, one car having been withdrawn. |
