April 23 Judge James Hnrgls, on trial for the murder of James t'ockrlll today took the stand as the rlrst witness for the defense. The courtroom was crowded and the excitement excite-ment Intense Judge Hargif having been charged with being the chief conspirator in t he t r i:. d Judge Ilargls entered a general denial of the principal statements made hy the commonwealth's witnesses. He said that he felt bitter toward Thomas Cockrill because be-cause Cockrlll bad killed his brother, Benjamin Hargls. He made the further sensational state-m-Tit that he had stated openly he would furnish any amount of money necessary to any man who would kill him. He said he had no feeling against James Cockrlll He denied Anse White's statement state-ment that he (White) had been requested by Hargls to kill live men. among them James Cockrlll. |
