Washington Gladden seeks to make out a case of perjury, and In rlolnjc so assumes paternity for a falsehood which has been frequently published during dur-ing the past ten years, and until now never answered. ' Dr. Gladden makes mm h of his position posi-tion as an original Investigator, .and says thai It Is within th.- power of every Intelligent man to find out from the original documents whether the statement state-ment Is true or not Statement Is Untrue. Rut unfortunately his statement Is untrue, un-true, Htid his whole charge of perjury rests upon a garbled report. The tostl-mony tostl-mony Is taken from a report of an investigation inves-tigation relative to trusts, in the New rk Senate, in 158. pages 419-20. Any me turning to that report will find that Mi Rockefeller's testimony tq the effei t that he was not In such i company' did not refer to the South Improvement company at all. but to another and on-tlrely on-tlrely different corporation called the Southern Improvement company. Were Two Corporations. There were two corporations the South Improvement company nd the Southern Improvement company The Southern Improvement company was Incorporated in Pennsylvania on April 16, 1870, and Mr. Ke r-kefi ll-r .vas not connected with It. 'i ho South improvement company was Incorporated in Mav v7l and Mr Ro, ke- fciier was connected with it. The charters char-ters of both these companies are printed in foil in the statutes of Pennsylvania, and are accessible to all. Should Have Known the Facts If Dr Gladden garbled the testimony Iti order to make out a case there Is nothing noth-ing more to s.i If he h is done It Ignnr-Sl Ignnr-Sl llv and bafl confused the names of thSSS two corporations he lr scarcely less culp-ahle. culp-ahle. since when making a charge of so serious a character It was obviously his duty to possess himself of the facts." |
