Show LOGAN MAY BUY OUT ITS RIVAL Effort io Freeze It Out a Failure. Municipality Therefore Likely to Purchase Telluride Plant in Cache. Commercial Club of Logan Has Taken Matter Up and Will Urge Council to Act. Special to The Tribune. LOGAN. Utah, April 16. A very grotesque gro-tesque situation obtains here relative to the municipal electric light plant, ligan City owns and manages an electric light and power plant. This plant competes with the Telluride Power company. The city authorities want the whole tield, but are not willing to pay the Telluride people the price they for their distributing stem The City 'ouncll has made three distinct efforts to purchase the property of Its competitor. ofTerlng, respect I . ei . 116,000, JSVnoo and 28.000 for It. Tho T illu-ride illu-ride company asks S.'tfl.iKiij for Its dl-ttii. tlon SNstem, In round numbers, nnd this the Council refuses to pay This Is the situation an It appears at present. In the clrcumstance-s It would seem that there Is nothing to be done but Ie1 WOjl enough alone. But the City Council Is not happy It does not like its rival. It wants thai rini to quit the Held, The rival sells its lights at 20 cents per 16-candle 16-candle power whereas the city sells at ?13 cents per 16-candle power There are some people here who prefer paying 20 cents a light rather than 33 cents. Every effort has been made to Induce these citizens citi-zens to see their error, but they persist. Resort to Coercion. In sheer desperation the Council now Is proposing to resort to coercive measures The thing proposed Is to double the tax. and by this means compel all who use the Telluride people's lights to pay twice the present amount of taxes to tho municipal plant This, It is argued would enable the city to meet Its obligations and reduce tho cost of lights from 3.3 to 10 cents each, thus dealing the Tellurlile company double blow by forcing It to pay the citv double Its present taxes, and at the s.niie time being compelled to reduce Its price for lights one-half. This situation has called out some very vigorous protests, not from tne Telluride people, who are serene and apparently happy, hut from citizens who refuse to be coerced In this way and have their faxes Increased at the same tlmo. Hence the Commercial club has taken the mat-tor mat-tor up. May Buy the Plant. On Thursday night the club mot in special spe-cial session, a large attendance being present, and pao four good hojis to this matter, hearing DroOOJHMonfl, argument nod eloquence galore and rtnally adjourned ad-journed without action One very sensible sensi-ble thing, however, was mooted that may bear fruit The proposition was this: To purchase the distribution system of the Telluride people at their own price." This would solve the present difficulty and re-lee re-lee our distress. It would coat 136,000 to do H In a very able paper road by H E Hatch to the Commercial club, it was shown that, by this method. In twen-t twen-t veirs the city could pay this $3.5.000.
