Everything washed, everything aired, everything perfectly attended to this is th.y Impression ' given by the prison surroundings Compared With Other Prisons. When this slate of things is compared com-pared with that which exists in the prisons of aome of the older States, then oply can the condition in Itah s penitentiary be appreciated. Take, for Instance, the Stat" prison Ot Illinois, which has now an Increase of Insanity among Its Inmates also an Increase in tuberculosis of the lungs. It Is reported that this prison averages over fifteen I inmates a year who become Insane, and onlv this year there are twenty-three twenty-three tnn who have contracted con- 1 sumption since their Incarceration. I This stale of affairs is due to lack of recreation, small cells with bad air and more than one person in a cell. Little Sickness in Utah Pen. At Utah's State prison fejr a long time the average of sickness has been only one man a month, anel at the present day there Is no one sick. Bed Clothing Aired. The bedclotb" In the cells are left on the clotheslines out of doors to air all clay twice a week, and each cell Is washed out every day. This library, strange to say. has but little contribution made to it by charity. Tasks of Convicts. Product of the Farm. The farm of the State prison, which is worked by the prisoners, produces about ITOu bushels of potatoes, nnel all other vegetables in v- ratio. Melons are included In this, the prisoners having hav-ing as good melons as any In town Convicts Good Servants. Warden Tratt declares that prisoners are the best servants to be found He gives as one reason that they cannot demand higher wages ami strike for them. Some of the prisoners cook and walr on the guards and Warelen Pratt, and In return they have the privilege of the library in the house occupied by the Warden, and generally more llb-erti". llb-erti". Nine Federal Prisoners At present there are nine United Slates prisoners. Unlike some penitentiaries peniten-tiaries the Utah prison makes no difference dif-ference between these prisoners and Others In many States, the I 'tilted States prisoner Is exempted from certain cer-tain kinds of work, and given better treatment generally. But then the treatment in Utah Is better all around. Object to Women Convicts. The Warden Is not anxious to have run more women In the confines of the jail, "Several years ago," said Warden Pratt, "we had eight women here, and those eight women made more trouble than all the men put together. Why ' Because they would quarrel among themselves Men generally get along In prison, but women must quarrel New Armory Complete. The new armory Is now complete.
