Show WATER TREATMENT. New York Hospital Does Away "With Mechanical Restraint. NEW YORK. March 29 By the systematic syste-matic use of various forms of hot and cold baths, Jets and douches, vapor and hot-air hot-air hatha, the Manhattan State hospital, on Ward's island, has done away entirely with sedatives or mechanical restraint for the patients, even when violently demented dement-ed or In strorfe deliriums This hospital, tho Ilrst public Institution In the country to adopt the use of water as a recognized part of Its course of treatment, has been experimenting und tabulating tho results for some time. Forms of "water treatment" are Ir. use there which are said to have been tried elsewhere, noti'.bly I he "continuous bath" for patients Sn violent delirium. The patient, pa-tient, nlnced In a bathtub of water at exactly ex-actly blood heat, is kept thero under observation ob-servation by experienced nurses ana the physicians for hours for days if necessary neces-sary until the delirium has abated. In cne case It was found necessary to ?ccp the patient immersed ln this wutcr fourteen four-teen days. She camo out of the delirium, and undvr other branches of the treatment treat-ment recovered from her dementia. The death rato In such cases was formerly for-merly CO per cent, but the physicians having hav-ing charge of the experiments believe tbolr treatment will save the life of every patient under delirium, unites some other form of insanity or physical disease sets In. Under the new scheme patients no longer subject to restrulnt are kept outdoors out-doors in tetits find pavilions. They are ilrst examined carefully by a physician and tho Mur.ies, who then, from tho date, map out a plan of treatment. In some cases a bath of carbon dioxide has beeti used.
