Show I' DESERTED WIFE AND BABE. Woman and Child Virtually Without Food and Clothing-. While tho Sheriff and deputies arc keeping an eye open for one Martin Lewis, who on Wednesday last deserted his wife and fifteen-months old babe, It is to bo hoped that charitably inclined persons will come to tho rescue of tho little woman, who Is penniless and without with-out even enough clothing to protect her-wclf her-wclf and babo from the cold. They can bo found at tho second house cast of the county Jail, where In a miserable room . -with almost no furnishings they havo ; been given temporary shelter. When seen 1 yesterday afternoon Mrs. Lewis said: ) "We came here from Idaho Falls, and have been living In Salt Lako about three I months. My husband has always made ( more or less money, but he has lately rc- i fused to provldo for me. As you can see. the baby Is. nearly naked, and I curt get u position becauso no one wants any ono around with a child. Some havo proposed that I send, tho little ono to an orphan's home, but I would rather die than do this. Oh, It Is terrible staying here without proper food for the baby and knowing that there Is no one to turn to In mv hour of trouble They all say that tilings will turn out right and that I must cheer up. I have tried to, but It does no good, and i 1 am almost insane with worrvlng I I havo lost whatever lovo I may have had for my husband, because he has used mo so, but I wish they would catch him and compel him to provldo for his child. As for myself, I can mako a living some- how." Mrs. Lowls certainly does not look strong, and Is evidently far from well. That some one of tho many charltablo Institutions In-stitutions In Salt Lake will assist her now that attention has been called to her case, seems certain. In tho meantime an effort will bo mado to find tho husband , nnd compel him to caro for his family. |
