Stephen Moffitt, one of tho most prominent men In northern New York, died at his residence near this city today, aged . In the Civil war he was brcvottcd Brlgadlcr-Goncral. lie served on Gen. Wcssell's and Gen Gibbon's Gib-bon's staff, and wan provost marshal of the Twenty-fourth Army corps from Its origin to the close of the war. He wn in Llbby prison, as well as prison at Macon and Danville, Ga. President Grant appointed him collootor of customs for the District of Champlain In 1S76, to which offlco he was reappointed by Presidents Hayes and Harrison.
