Show I SITUATION IN MONTANA Difficult to Predict Results in the State REPUBLICANS WILL GAIN This Much la Certain and They Hay Elect Ticket Uncertainty of the Labor Voto Bonders the Outlook More Complex War Between tho Democratic Factions Led by Senator Clark and F August Heinze Has Been Unusually Bitter Republicans Republi-cans Have Attended to Buoiness TRIUNE SPECIAL Helena Mont Nov Montana has had a number or notable campaigns cam-paigns but never In all Its history hast has-t had one so eventful and so singularly singular-ly complex as the one now nearing a close S complicated la the situation that It IR I Indeed difficult to predict results re-sults This however appears to be certain The Republican party Is sure to make material gains Jf not actually carry the State AMALGAMATED INTERESTED Looked at In any way one can tho Amalgamated Copper company which In still Interested In politics although not actively Identified with any party In the present campaign will como up smiling In tho ond Should the Republicans win exSen ntor Thomas H Carter will be In active ac-tive control once more I United States Senator W A Clark Is victorious the rent corporations In view of his friendly attitude In the campaign will have nothing to fear IF HEINZE WINS Should F Augustus Hclnzo carry off the prlre tho worst that the Amalgamated Amal-gamated can expect IB a continuation or litigation In unfriendly courts of Silver Bow county In which event Senator Clark may be expected to Join forces with the great corporation which he fought r vallcntly two years ago The Amalgamated company through Its general manager William Scallon recently declared that It was out of politics entirely and that may be so FEATURE OF CAMPAIGN The feature of the present campaign Is the quarrel between Senator William A Clark and F Augustus Helnse two millionaire mining magnates of Butte This quarrel broke out suddenly In tho Kummor nnd It has continued with a spirit not to ay bitterness thai surpassed sur-passed the great ClarkDaly feud which Involved this State for years during the life of the Anaconda magnate mag-nate The end Is not yet How far thin fight which Is now as biter as hatred can make It will go can only be surmised sur-mised I too threatens to involve the entire Stat The breech has grown FO wide that it cnn never be closed and only the crushing defeat of one faction or tho other will stamp i out ISSUES TWO YEARS AGO Two years ago the Issue was clearly whether Mr Clark after retiring from the United States Senate under circumstances cir-cumstances that were to say the least humiliating should be vlndl 1 caled or whether exSenator Carter the recognized head of the Republican machine and the Amalgamated Copper companys agent should be elected In that campaign Mr Hclnne recognized ns a Republican although his services to the party xp to that time had been of an Indefinite and shadowy character I charac-ter worked for Senator Clark HATED COPPER COMBINE As It appeared later Heinze did not work for the Democratic cause because of his love for Senator Clark hut because be-cause of his hatred of tho Amalgamated Amalgamat-ed Copper company which he had been opposing single handed for several years In tho courts with signal success suc-cess Heinze helped although the extent ex-tent of his assistance In that campaign was not of such n marked character ns would entitle him to any great claim for the Democratic victory I HEINZE AND CLARK PART Mr Clark was reelected to the Unite Unit-e States Senate after a battle with Helnzc over the organization of the Legislature In which tho Senator to be won out I was right there that Clark and Helnzo began to part company Mr Clark thought ho was entitled to the Democrotr leadership and the majority ma-jority of his party thought so to Mr Hclnre up to that lime wa still a Republican Re-publican but with a minority following follow-ing In the Assembly he wan able to make n showing In the matter of leg IslatonOPEN OPEN RUPTURE OCCURS The open rupturo between Heinze and Clark did not occur until a few months ago Early In July Hclnze gave n series of dinners In Helena Atone At-one of them to which had been Invited Gov Toolo and n number or other prominent Democrats Heinze announced an-nounced his intention to afllllato from that time forth with the Democrats Gov Toolo welcomed Helnzc Into tho party and the health of Democracy was toasted In 1 caso or two of champagne cham-pagne HEINZES AMBITION I was then that Helnzes ambition became known He aspired to become the leader of the Democratic party Shortly afterward at the frt meeting of the Democratic State central com mlllee when the real test of strength was to be made Ilelnze turned up with 11 votes Just onehalf of the committee com-mittee Business was at a standstill until a compromise was reached TOOLE GOES TO HEINZE At that meeting Gov Toolc whoso home is In Lewis and Clarke county voted the proxy of the Silver Bow county committeeman until that dora dor-a recognized Clark supporter The Silver ver Bow committeeman disappeared a few minutes before the meeting and tho Governor who wan and Is a Heinz man turned up with the proxy From that Incident grew charges of bribery There were counter charges until the air was full of stories of the alleged corruption of members of the Democratic Demo-cratic State committee BECAME PUBLIC SCANDAL From that miicllug until the lime of the State convention ensued ielm a campaign as has never before been e < VMi In Montana I was confined entirely to the Democrallc facllone each of which wanted lo hold control of tho Slate convention PrlmarloJ were packed delegates to county conventions conven-tions It was commonly loporluJ wero boighJ until the thing became a public ccnndnl in some parts of the Slatt At the State convention which was heId In Bozcman Senator Clark controlled everything and Ilelnze and hh contesting con-testing delcgJitlonB weN sent home NERVE OF HEINZE And then the genius or the nerve oC thin man Ilelnze showed luclf Not despairing de-spairing Helnzc organized a new party In Sliver Bow county which he called tho antitrust Democratic part Helnre had a strong following In Silver Bow county and It soon became apparent appar-ent that his Influence would be folt In the campaign LABOR PARTY MOVE The Labor party held a convention In Helena and acting with Ilelrizcs agents nominated only a Congressman leaving the place on the ticket for Associate As-sociate Justice blank That was done on the suggestion of Ilclnzc and his agents The Populists did tho aamo thing REPUBLICANS INT HARMONY In the meantime the Republicans held a State convention In Great Falls Senator Sen-ator Carter controlled tho convention absolutely The Republicans had been very much divided two years ago the anilCarter faction being In the minority minor-Ity but of enough Importance to make Itself Celt and heard on every occasion where Carter was an Issue This year the nntlCartcr people were In the background TURNED SMITH DOWN After time Republicans had turned down Judge Hen 15 C Smith of Helena candidate for the nomination of Associate Asso-ciate Justice because It was said the Ilelnze parlies Intended to Indorse him the Republicans nominated Judge William Wil-liam L Holloway of Hozeman for that office and Joseph LL I DIxon of MIssoula for Congress HEINZE PARTIES FOR HOLLOWAY Less than a welt after the Helnzc parties Indorsed Judge Holloway fpr Associate Justice This was n stroke of genius that the regular Democracy had not anticIpated and at once the Democratic Dem-ocratic press began to make a fight on Judge Holloway The result was that Judge Holloway accepted the nomination nomina-tion from the Heinze parties PURITY OF COURT ATTACKED From that lime pn the Democratic newspapers of the Stale sought to Inject In-ject Into the campaign the Idea that the purity of the courts was Involved In the present campaign They attacked Judge Hollowny and have kept It up COURT IN NO DANGER Rlglit here It may he said that the Supreme court of Montana Is absolutely absolute-ly In no danger Judge Jere B Leslie of Great Falls the Democratic candidate candi-date for AssocIate Justice Is n man of high standing In his profession and the Republican press of the State has universally uni-versally borne testimony to his character char-acter as a citizen and ablllly as a Judge JudgeAPPLIES APPLIES TO HOLLOWAY On the other hand what has been paid of Judge Leslie will apply to Judge Holloway with equal truth Both can dldalcs are now on the District bonch Judge Holloway Is n young man with an absolutely clear record and no candid can-did man believes that either he or Judge Leslie will favor the Amalgamated Amalga-mated Copper company Hclnses United Unit-ed Copper company or any other corporation corpo-ration or Individual while on the bench HEINZES CAMPAIGN TOUR Two weeks ago Ilelnze started out with a special train on a campaigning tour He took with him a few singers and vaudeville cnlertalnors an he has spoken In every town in the State He Is not an orator but he has had large crowds and seems to entertain them He has worked for the election of Judge Holloway and the Labor and Populist candidate for Congressman Martin Dee Jr of Butte CLARIC TAKES STUMP United States Senator Clark In the last ten days has spoken In the principal princi-pal l cities of the State and has been well received In his Kpccches he attacks at-tacks Ilelnze denies Helnzes charge that he Is In league with the Amalgamated Amalga-mated and shows how Ilelnze undertook under-took to have him ejected from the United States Senate while at the came time professing to bo 1 his friend Up and down the State these two millionaires mil-lionaires have gone each abusing tho other to the great good of the Republican Repub-lican party Gov Toole a lifelong Democrat refused re-fused tor take to the stump CHANCES FAVOR REPUBLICANS At this stage In the campaign It would seem that the Republicans have an excellent chance of carrying the State The Republican SIte central committee feels sure of Judge Hollo wayH election and professes to believe that DIxon will also be chosen There are grounds for thin as the labor record rec-ord o John Morgan Evans of MIssoula the Democratic candidate for Congressman Congress-man has not been good and he has been denounced by organized labor throughput the State DEPENDS ON LABOR VOTE The Democrats had a majority of about 15000 two years ago rhen the Labor party and the Popullals voted for the fusion ticket In view of the uncertainty of the labor vote the situation sit-uation Is made moro complex than In 1DOO Much depends upon the labor vote If the Labor party stands by Its ticket Holloway Republican will undoubtedly un-doubtedly be elected while either Dixon DIx-on or Evans will be chosen Congressman Congress-man In the last few weeks tho Clark people have been able to doflcot no small portion of the labor leaders to Its Idc This aplll will have an effect upon up-on the vote but Just what effect It Is difficult to predict AS IX LEGISLATURE The Legislature Is pretty certain to remain Democratic at least It will not be Republican The Republicans cannot can-not very well hope to carry Silver Bow wounly although It Is there that the blllcrcst fight Ifi i being waged between the Clark and Hclnze factions COURT DECISION INTERFERES On Wednesday the Supreme court rendered a decision that will play an Important part In election results Helnzo controls the county officers of Silver Bow county The Cleric of that county undertook to put the Hclnze Democratic ticket on the official ballot as the Democratic ticket The Clark faction took the mutter to tho Supreme Su-preme court and after n hearing that lasted four days the court decided in favor of the Clark faction which was recognized aa the regular Democracy The Ilflnzc Democrats will be kept off the ticket hut there will silll remain the Populist and Labor tickets on the official ballot Had Hclnze been able to have kept the Clark ticket off tho ballot he would have won Sliver Bow county hands down As It Is he may carry the county SIXTEEN SENATORS TO ELECT Sixteen holdover Senators are to be elected next Tuesday About half of them will be Republicans The eastern or cow counties will go Republican this year as uaual Gnllutln county the home of Judge Ilolloway may bo carried by the Republicans Lewla and Clarke count Is In the doubtful column with about an even break predicted pre-dicted REPUBLICANS SAW WOOD While Clark and Heinze have becn making the fight of their livesa bat tie Ihut ivIII determine the question of leadership In the Democratic Dart in thin State llu Republicans have been attending to business nnd quietly quiet-ly xawlng wood There Is I sllll somehow some-how of fight against Carter lght l Cartel among Homo of the Republican but aa the exSenator has not made himself very prominent In the present campaign It may be said that the Republicans arc more united than they have been art 1SM before the free silver mania divided di-vided the parly j |
