Show TOO MUCH WATER IN MILK I Tests of Thirteen Samples by Chemist Harms Reveal NoGerms but Floods of Water In the hope of finding some evidence of typhoid fever germ Herman Harms the Stale Chemist has made an analysis anal-ysis of the milk sold by thirteen different dif-ferent concerns No germs appear to i have been found but the Interesting discovery was made that all the milk sold in ihu city is not up to the standard stand-ard required by law and In one instance In-stance at least there were Indications that the sanitary conditions might be Improved by those handling the milk In the case of the Eureka dairy of Ccntcrvillc the test showed a total of 1103 per cent of solids The law rc fiulres that there must be 12 per cent of solids The milk sold by Milkman Lambert of Tenth South street showed a totalof lOfiS per cent solids One batch of Elgin milk showed 11 total of 1113 per cent of solids Jn each of these eases the percentage of water Is too large The test would indicate that the product comes from cows that sean se-an abundance of milk but it does not contain a sufficient quantity of solids A bhteh of Elgin milk contained 1220 per cent of solids but tho percentage of water S7SO brought it below the standard The milk of the Culders Park dairy was up to the standard but there was an appreciable amount of sediment and foreign odor This is alio true of the Lambert milk A mark was placed opposite several tests made by Chemist Harms calling attention to the defects which moved him to withhold his approval regardIng regard-Ing the cleanliness of the milk The milk of the Kenyon dairy hits found to he above the standard but hada had cow odor Several teats were used in arriving at the conclusions of the chemists and In several instances duplicate du-plicate examinations were made with Bnbcocks test The Lambert milk seems to have undergone u triple test but the result was not changed None of the tests showed formaldehyde formalde-hyde Whnl action will be taken in the matter Is not certain One of the chimers chi-mers of the Health department said yesterday In those cases where the test reveals a lack of solids well have lo serve notice on the t cows to give a better quallt3 of milk or change their mode of living |
