Show REOUKING AN APOSTLE The church organ appears lo be unhappy un-happy over the interview thai Apostle John Henry Smith gave out It says Many covert and Insinuating attacks are being made on the alignment of the people on national political lines Such alignment Is perfectly proper though any ritizcn is I as much at liberty not to so align himself as to align himself him-self nwl those who are making these i attacks are doing so for sinister ends I Beware of them This nppcais to be a rather harsh rebuke to the Apostles I admiring reminiscences of the old days when a few men got together talked matteis over and made selections for office without any of this flummery of party primaries conventions and soon so-on and a contemptuous slap at his further fur-ther declaration that we were all as one big family then and sometimes gathered gath-ered in the Tabernacle say on Saturday Satur-day afternoon men women and children chil-dren talked over our needs and de cided upon men for office who were afterwards af-terwards voted for although no primaries pri-maries or conventions were called There were no parly lines drawn then and I think we had a good government then It was just this sort of thing that raised the storm in the old c1asn few men getting together and making the selections for office and the people of a sect settling such things In the Tabernacle or other places of worship And in order to avoid the rekindling of the old fires no wonder the church organ calls on people to beware of those who talk t in this way But It is rather cheeky after all for such a person as the editor of the church organ to thus openly rebuke a man so much higher In authority than he Is himself It Is not only destructive to discipline and subversive of authority it borders very closely on Insolence The nest thing we may expect to sec In that organ Is a denial that what the Apostle said is I true It used to be extremely ex-tremely voluble In such denials at the very time the methods Apostle John Henry Smith I so clearly describes were commonly practiced fn the meantime The Tribune stands for free speech open confessions May there be more of thcmnnd for all the adjuncts of the American electoral elec-toral system But we Indorse cordially cor-dially the remark of Judge Loofbourow that if we arc to have church control l let us understand the fact before elec lion and not wait llll afterwards to find it out |
