disappointment to them The chief Industries of the State did not advance to the extent that they had expected and the fact that there was no retrogression has not tempered tem-pered their disappointment This year 1903 opens wIth brighter prospects however and some his things are being I planned In the first place the fault with 1902 i was that theie was practically no railroad rail-road construction In the State and Wy omlnsites know Unit until the railroads come to a realization of the neld which the State affords there cannot be much more ogress In sonic or the chief industries i in-dustries mining and oil for Instance Then at no time during the year wen livestock conditions more than fair and in the latter monthu the Industry lost almost as much as It had gained In the spring and summer After a good winter market conditions turned out to be wholly had and some shippers came back from Omaha Kansas City and Chicago poorer than when they Icfc l Wyoming In the fall prices WCIQ even lower but the range was In such shape that cattlemen and Hockmastcrs were foiced upon the market and had to take whatever price was offered Fiogicss In the mining and oil Industries Indus-tries was satisfactory but they are secondary sec-ondary to stockraising and not yet a vital factor In the welfare of Wyoming In coal mining considerable progress was made and the year placed Wyo mlmr in the ton notches of the list of coalproducing States New mines were opened the output of old ones increased In-creased and had not the Union Pacific strike handicapped the operation of Its mines from June to the end of the year the coal record would have been a new one and higher than that of any preceding pre-ceding year In the States history Agriculture dining the year com mencod to loom up among the Imnor tnnt Industries owing to the rapid settlement set-tlement of the Big Horn country by Mormons and farmers crowded out of E stem States A resume of progress during tho year can he given under the heads of railroads rail-roads live stock coal mining mining agriculture and oil Less railroad work was done in Wyoming Wy-oming during 1902 than In any previous year since 189S The Union Pacific built two short cutoffs with a combined length of less l than ten miles the Lara mle Hahns Peak Pacific graded twentyfive miles of line between Laramie Lara-mie and Centennial but laid no rails and the Burlington Colorado Southern South-ern and Fremont Elkhorn Missouri Valley made minor Improvements The purpose of the Laramie Hahns Peak PacUlc people Is to build a short line about 100 miles will be the total trackage between Laramie in Al bany county and Encampment in Car bon county taking In Centennial and the New Rambler mine en route A branch will be built to Gold Hill Twen tylive of the thirty miles to Centennial were graded this year work ceasing i early in December on account of inclement In-clement weather Tracklaylng will be commenced early In the spring lhough the promoters claim that such is not the case the ultimate destination of the Laramie Hahns Peak Pacific Is said to be Steamboat Springs Colo forming a connection between the Union Pacific and the Moffat road During the year surveyors said to be In the employ of tho Union Pacific ran a line between Walcott on tho Union Pacific and Encampment also a branch from Encampment south in the direction direc-tion of Battle Lake The Colorado Southern during the latter part of tho yenr strengthened the bvldgcs between Sunrise and Cheyenne in order thatheovler trains of ore might be handled This company la now engaged en-gaged in building a machine shop coal l chutes roundhouse and extensive yards at Cheyenne The Fremont Elkhorn Missouri Valley during the year Improved Us line between Clmdron Neb and Casper Cas-per Vyo and put on an additional pabongcr 1 train between Chadron and Douglas Wyo The Burlington replaced the seventy pound rails of ita Toluca MontCody Wyo branch with nlnetypound rails During the year the weekly train services ser-vices between Toluca and Cody and Holdredge Neb and Cheyenne were reduced from six to three trains Among the railroad Improvements reported re-ported for 1903 are an extension of the Burlingtons Guernsey line westward pn extension of the Northwesterns Fremont Fre-mont Blkhorn Missouri Valley line to Casper across Wyoming to Living stone Mont an extension of the Bur lingtons Cody line southward to Meete se Thcrmopolls and Camp KirwIn the doubletracking of the entire WyomIng division of the Union Pacific the construction = con-struction of a Union Pacific branch to Encampment the extension of the Fort Collins line up the valley of the Lone Tree to the Wyoming line and across the divide to Cheyenne and the ballast ing of the Wyoming division or the Union Pacific with Sherman Granger and Peterson gravel Three hundred I miles of the latter work was accomplished I accom-plished during LJ02 There is a report that an electric railroad is to be built during the next year between Casper and Lander but conservative people take no stock In It AL the close of the year there are not as many catlJc and sheep in the State as during the spring and summer I sum-mer months a large number of both classes of live stock having been shipped to market during the fall months The Increase In cattle over the num her In 1101 is estimated at about 121 000 making the total number at the close of 1902 about 971900 with a value of S29fl50000 The Increase In sheep over IDOl is not more than 800000 head an extraordinary I extraordi-nary number having been shipped out of the State In the fall on account of I range conditions which promised a I sdrlous shortage of feed during the winter months The total number of sheep at the close of 1002 Is about 0600 t 000 with a value of 519777908 The wool clip for 1902 amounted to 33000000 pounds with a value of 1000 000 This is an increase of 5500000 over IDOL 1D01The number of horses in the State is I about 5000 less than at the close of 1901 owing to the demand created by the I Government In purchasing cavalry horses The number of hornets at the clone of 1003 is about 17tfOUO with n value of 0100000 The total value of live stock In the State at the close of 1902 Is shown by tho following table Class Value Cattle SOmOOO Sheep Ji2757D08 Horses 6100000 Mules asses and swIne C51SO Total SSU33S3 There hi not much probability that future years will show any marked increase In-crease In cattle sheep or horses Practically the entire range of the State has boon covered and Is now supportIng support-Ing us many live stock as prudence will permit making an Increase worthy of particular mention out of the question The following tabulated statement shows the number of Encampment During 1902 there were 19 fatal and 14 nonfatal accidents In the mines This Is the smallest per cent of any State In the Union taking Into consideration con-sideration the number of tons of coal mined During the year one new mine was opened at Cody one on the Muddy near Glenrock and No2 at Glenrock Mining piogreased during 1902 in a greater degree than any other industry of Wyoming the Upper Platte district furnishing the greater part of the advance ad-vance This great district comprises tho minor districts of Grand Encampment Encamp-ment Battle Lalte Rambler Jelm and Gold Hill hi which ninetenths of the mining of the State conI operations excluded is carried on During the year twentyfive steam plants were erected in the district over properties which will in a short time be on the list of producers As much copper was not shipped from the district as In 1U01 the bulk of the ore miner being loft on the dumps to await the Inauguration of a more favorable system of transportation trans-portation than Unit afforded by freight trains with horses oa motive power The companies and Individuals operating operat-ing In the district are confident that a railroad will be built to Encampment during 1903 and In anticipation of its advent more attention has been given to development than to shipping The principal events of the year in the Uppor Platte district were the com pletJon of the Southern Wyoming tramway tram-way from tho ZPorrloHatfserty mine to tho smelter at Grand Encampment the sale of tho Now Rambler mine tho sale of tho FerrlaHasgerty mine to the North American Copper company for 51000000 the blowlnfjJn of the IncIter at the New Rumbler the enlargement of the capacity of the Grand Encampment Encamp-ment smelter from 1000 tons to 5000 tons per day the consolidation by the North American Copper company of various Interests of the districts and the discovery dis-covery of platinum In several localities The principal gold producer of they the-y r wan the Carlssa at South pass This mine turned out about 800000 worth of bullion At Camp KIrwin in Big Horn county and In numerous placer fields small amounts of told weto mined bringing the totnl production of the State to about 1100000 Exact figures of the gold production cannot be obtained for the reason that much of tho bullion Is included In the reports of South Dakota and Colorado The Iron mines at Sunrise Laramie county and Rawllns Carbon county worked steadily through the year about tho same amount as In 1902 be ing oioduced The silver production of tho State came from ores which were mined for other metals there being no regular sliver mines In Wyoming Ninetenths of the copper mined was taken out of the Upper Platte dIstrict and much of It Is still there awaiting shliwient The estimated mineral production of I the State for the year with the exception ex-ception of Iron figures whloh arc exact ex-act follows Metal Value Gold SUOOOOO Iron mfOO Silver h i j MOlK Platinum of the Stale but this Is the only place where it Is now refined During the year important gold discoveries dis-coveries were made In Carbon1 and Johnson counties < In the latter what Is Relieved to be the celebrated Lost Cabin mine was rediscovered but has not yet been worked Agriculture comes under the jurlstHc1 1 tlon of no particular department the State Government and there Isnd source from which accurate figures concerning this Industry can be drawn Absolutely no record of the value of agricultural products Is kept and it Is an impossibility to make an estimate with any foundation whatever During 1002 however agriculture in Wyoming did not make any great steps forward The settling of Big Horn county Is do Ing more to advance clndu2lr than any other factor though considerable progress Is 1 being made at Wheatland and In the Saratoga valley in Uintah county and Northern Laramie county and in Sheridan Crook Johnson and Weston counties Large Irrigation pro jects have been framed for Laramie Carbon Swcetwater Uintah and Big Horn counties The Irrigation act is dxpected l to advance ad-vance agriculture in Wydmlng to an extent that cannot be even surmised In every county of the Stat are large areas of and land that can be made Into fine farmlng dlstiicts by the construction con-struction of adequate reservoirs and the building of great ditch systems The only site for a Government reser u voir which hap been examined hI at Devils Gate Natrona county What bids fair to be the greatest in dustry of Wyoming advanced with great strides in 1002 but still Is in Ifa Infancy viz oil production The field In which the most activity prevailed Is that In Southern Uinlah county divided into the Spring Valley Val-ley and Fossil districts In both fields drilling operations were In progress during nearly the entire year and a number of strikes of a splendid grade of illuminating oil were made At the close of the year there are twentyfive drilling rigs In operation in the Spring Valley field and half a dozen wells ate producing The principal ones are those of the Jager Atlantic Pacific and American Consolidated 011 companies PlO pcctS are that prreat activity will prevail in this field In 1902 and that by the close of the year it will have taken Its place In the list of recognized producers pro-ducers In the Fossil field two companies have teen drilling and both have struck oil though not In paying quantities In the Popoagle field the Henderson outfit carried on drllllns operations throughout the year and Is now engaged en-gaged on its ninth well The first eight all produce fine lubricating oil and are all of the rusher class The tender sons propose to continue drilling until twentyfive wells have been sunk and will then probably build a rallind to carry their product to the market In the Bonanza field in Big Horn county the Fetterman field in Converse Con-verse county and In Laramie Carbon Car-bon Sweetwater Nationa anti Cionk l counties oil operations are being car tried on with good prospects In all The Bonanza and Fettjrman fields are especially promising In the latter oil was struck December 21th accompanied accom-panied by a tremendous flow of natural gas which If It contjnues will be utilized uti-lized to supply Douglas with foot The ireal plateau constituting Wyoming Wyo-ming Is underlaid at frequent Intervals with oil deposits and Indications of the existence of the mineral are found In every county |
