Show GRAND JURY JOKE OUT Street Car Motormans Idea of Humor WHY MRS KROGH IS CALLED Said to Have Had Polygamous Child in Charge t But Soon Convinced Jury That Baby Was Her OwnDr Pndon Recalled Re-called Yesterday Tho difference between gossip and act when It comes to a grand jury In cstlgntlon Is pretty well illustrated in the case of Mrs C VY Krogh who was before the Jury as a witness some days ago Yesterday It developed that there was a good practical Joko in connection with Mrs Kroghu testimony the grand jury and County Attorney Westervelt being the victims Tho exposure of the joke nut everyone around the city and county building on a broad grin yester lay and dispelled much of the awe that has hovered about tho grand Juryroom from the beginning of thelnvcstlgatlon SUCH A JOLLY MOTORMAN Some months ago when whispers were flying about in all directions regarding re-garding Tanner and his miscellaneous family relations Mrs Krogh presented her husband with a bouncing baby vrogh was tho conductor on a streetcar street-car running out into that part of the city and his motorman who seems to have been a wag took it upon himself to tell borne of those who rode on his car that one ot Tanners polygamous children was being raised In the Krogh family Ho thought this would be a good Joke on his conductor County Attorney orney Westervelt was one to whom the story was told and he was so Impressed wIth It that he laid It before the grand jury for investigation The upshot was that Mrs Krogh was summoned before the Jury to tell all about the birth of her own child She had the baby with her when she testified and it took her but a jiffy to demonstrate that the Tanner story was a Joke J A Fitzgerald living at 341 East South Temple appeared before the grand Jury of his own volition and complained com-plained that a number of people were persecuting him In various ways He demanded that his care be Investigated by the Jury There was nothing definite In his charges PADEX UP AGAIN Dr William M Padcn was recalled and was before the Jury for the better part of an hour yesterday The supposition sup-position is that ho was laying before the Jury the Information In his possession posses-sion In regard to polygamy in general Dr Paden was one of the most active In the preparation of the protest agnlnst the seating of Smoot in the United States Senate and it Is natural to suppose sup-pose that he placed at the disposal bf the Jury much of the Information upon which the protests were based Commissioner James H Anderson Sheriff Emery and Albert Smith were Before the Jury In the afternoon testify ing as to conditions at the county Infirmary In-firmary Smith Is the South State street grocer who has furnished supplies to the Infinnnry at times James Sabine was also subpoenaed to appear yesterday yester-day but was sitting on another Jury |
