Show WATERS CEDING IN FLOOD STRICKEN CITIES I Report of Heavy Loss of Life Untrue NO BODIES IN THE DRIFTS Armourdale Kan Is Still Submerged Sub-merged Sixteen Thousand Inhabitants Have Fled From Their HomesEvery Building Damaged Kansas City Mo June 3The Missouri Mis-souri river fell seven inches between 7 a m and 7 p m today and the Kansas Kan-sas river fell nine Inches In the same time There was sunshine during a large part of the day and the general feeling was hopeful Militiamen and police still guard all approaches to the flooded district and soldiers halt pedestrians pe-destrians in the residence streets latent late-nt night for there are no lights the electric plant being still shut down Seven street car lines arc in operation and others will resume In a day or two The city waterworks will begin pumping late tonight and the retail business district will be supplied with water tomorrow Railroads arc still giving incomplete service but are repairing re-pairing the washouts LOSS OF LIFE SMALL The reports of heavy loss of life In Kansas City Kan are not true and the stories of bodies lying in the drifts i there arc unfounded The loss of property prop-erty has not been overestimated however how-ever An Associated Press launch crossed to Armourdale today and cruised for miles through the water lanes that formerly were city streets APvMOURDALE UNDER WATER The entire city in under water In many places 20 feet deep and all of the 16000 inhabitants have fled Except the watchmen in the packing houses on the river front not a human being was to be seen oreven a domes Me animal In many of the houses the upper windows were open and the rooms In confusion Red and white flags hung from the upper up-per windows of some houses the occupants occu-pants of which evidently had been rescued res-cued No steps have been taken to protect household goods in the buildings build-ings EVERY BUILDING DAMAGED Armourdale will not be habitable for a long time after the flood subsides Every building has been more or less damaged and hundreds utterly ruined A strong current is running through the town and the river may persist in following this course Where the water is deep and still there will be six feet of solidly packed mud when the flood abates and this will need to be cleared away On the roofs of houses that have been uncovered a foot of mud lies CHOKED WITH DEBRIS Kansas avenue the principal thoroughfare thor-oughfare of Armourdale is choked 20 feet deep with the debris of houses telegraph poles sidewalks and fences The brick buildings have stpod losing all their windows but the water has packed the streets with rubbish The clearing away of tho mud and ruins will be a work of months LIKE MOUNTAIN TORRENT In the west bottoms of Kansas City the waters of the Kansas river are rushing through the streets like a mountain torrent Several old brick buildings undermined by the water fell today Not one wooden building Is fit to be used The elevated railroad is tearing down a number of the stations which were tottering IN WHOLESALE DISTRICT The police are very active In the wholesale district where many loaded freight cars stand on the tracks and the warehouses are full of valuable goods Men prowling about in boats are compelled to account for themselves under un-der threat oC shooting In the stockyards stock-yards district dead horses mules and cattle are floating on every side LOSSES TO RAILROADS The losses of the railroads on loaded and empty oars standing in the yards oC the west bottoms is even larger than represented The contents of the loaded cars must be seriously damaged and practically all of the thousands of cars have been overturned or smashed The subsidence of the water left a fringe of dry land next to the bluffs In tho west bottoms The owners oC houses and stores vacated by the water promptly took possession and began clearing the mud from the floors STATEMENT FROM MAYOR The following was Issued by Mayor Reed today Inquiries are being made respecting the effect of the flood upon the business of Kansas City Mo There Is absolutely no ground for any anxiety concerning the business or financial condition of Kansas City Mo In which city the large business establishments are located The wholesale houses situated on the lowlands have resumed business through branches already established es-tablished uptown The waters aro rapidly subsiding and complete resumption resump-tion of business In the institutions located lo-cated on the lower lands Is only a matter mat-ter of hours Wo expect to have our waterworks system in operation in twentyfour hours WILL APPRECIATE AID Our sister city Kansas City Kan the place of residence ot many people employed by our large establishments here has suffered a very great loss and we are informed will appreciate aid from other cities |
