Show iDAHO GETS CLARK CUP Awarded Trophy for Most Perfect Show ef Fruit WAS FREE FROM DISEASE Codlin Moth Ruined Chances if Utah Trophy for Display of Hops Went to Washington One fot Bartry to Montana ITJllUUXK I SPECIAT Ogden Sept 17rdtilio took first prize and won the GOO loving cup offered of-fered by United States Senator W A Clark for the best collection of fresh fruIts When the I decision of the judges was announced at JHO oclock thin afternoon after-noon there was great exuberance upon up-on the part of the Idaho delegation in the horticultural show which was shared by 1 many of the visitors who made a critical examination of the Idaho collection Upon the other hand hundreds of Utah people and a goodly share of the spectators expressed surprise sur-prise and not a little indignation at the idea i of Utahs fine display being relegated to second place ONLY TWO COMPETITORS Utah and Idaho were the only two competitors for the loving cup California Cali-fornia Montana Colorado and Oregon did not enter for the grand prize seeming seem-ing to concede the cup to the two 1 States named The non conpeti rig States received advcrtlscmeut galore from the fine collections on exhibition and the margin between the poorest collection shown and the one that look the cup was Infinitesimal In the eye of the ordinary observer WHY IDAHO WON Upon every hand was heard the question ques-tion why could Idaho win the eu pin the face of the truly gorgeous and artistic ar-tistic display of the Utah fruit The shortest and most conclusive answer I was because three judges were unanimous unan-imous In giving to Utahs northern I neighbor ro those who sought further I fur-ther reasons 11 was pointed out ns has been noted heretofore In these dispatches dis-patches that completeness of collection as to clashes und varieties perfection of specimen correct nomenclature and freedom from evidence of the codling moth worm would be the points considered con-sidered rather than arrangement and display Il was upon the higher scoring scor-ing by Idaho on these points that the decision was made The list of varieties varie-ties t as given below together w ith the fact that all the Idaho fruit was free from orms Unfortunately the last named point was against the Utah collection col-lection since It Is claimed that numerous numer-ous apples and pears therein were disgustingly dis-gustingly marred by unmistakable signs of worm depredations It I t was stated by one prominent Utah horticulturist I horti-culturist that a member of the committee com-mittee of awards was indignant at the idea of Utah allowing even one wormy apple or pear to appear in the t collection collec-tion and he was vehement in his protests pro-tests to the other judges against paying a premium on slothfulnesS by 1 gruntinG a prize to the Utah fruit ANOTHER POINT Another point that militated against Utah and was made the most of by Idaho was the claim by the delegates of the latter State that much of the Utah fruit was improperly named Thlo claim was made without giving Prof Hull who did the naming for Utah In apples a chance to explain or defend his action It was certainly a dilllcult i task to correctly name the apples many I of which were Immature and not fully colored Some most competent fruit growers present today asserted that It would probably be Impossible to secure two experts In the United Slates who would agree upon names for all the apples displayed What won the cup was made up of the following classes and varieties of fruit A1PLES
