Show CINERSmNE is lAID Ceremonies at Site of New Presbyterian Church GREAT GROWTH IS SHOWN I From Ten to 500 in ThirtyTwo Years I I Now Structure at Brigham and 0 Streets to Cost 8100000 Contents of Box In Cornerstone Thirtytwo years ago next November the First Presbyterian church of this city was organized by Rev Dr Arnold with an enrolled membership of ten I Yesterday the cornerstone of the now First Presbyterian church was laid and the brief historical sketch read by Dr Paden showed that the church now has a membership of more than 500 that the Sunday school has nn enrollment enroll-ment of more than 700 and the corner ctonc of a church costing 100000 was about to bo laid Of the amount necessary neces-sary to pay the cost of the church more thnn fourilfths has already been raised and Dr Pa den felt augured that the remainder re-mainder would be forthcoming by the time It IH needed CEREMONIES AT SITE A goodly number of members of the church and Sunday school were present at the ceremonies connected with the laying of the cornerstone at Brigham and C streets yesterday afternoon which took place at 430 i oclock Rev Dr 1 Paden opened the programme by reading salutations from the Scriptures This was followed by the singing of the Doxology by all present and then Dr Worclcn of Philadelphia secretary ort or-t he National Sunday School association associa-tion gavo readings from the second chapter of First Peter After a hymn by the congregation Rev Dr Padcn gave a brief historical sketch of tho church and then read a list of the contents of the box placed in the cornerstone cor-nerstone This Included the constitution constitu-tion of the church a list of officers members and various organizations within the church catalogues of Westminster West-minster college and the Collegiate Institute In-stitute a list of missionary workers In Utah in 100203 historical records concerning con-cerning the First church and photographs photo-graphs of the old building various reports re-ports and memorials from Sunday schools Ladles Aid the Mission societies socie-ties and the Christian Endeavor society so-ciety miscellaneous memorials Including Includ-ing some of Dr Padens published sermons ser-mons copies of the dally papers and reports re-ports of the last General assembly Then the cornerstone was laid by Dr McNIece for many years the pastor of the First Prcnbyterlan church and now the dean of Westminster college The benediction was pronounced by DI Arnold Ar-nold the founder of the church In this city |
