tho Most Rancorous JMectlugs r < in Years at Which Teachers Were Chosen t i L Prof William A Wctzcll supervisor t of music Mrs Franc 11 Elliott supervisor I super-visor of drawing and Prof George N I McKay principal of the Lowell school i lt j were offered up is n sacrifice by l the I Board of Education at Its meeting last evening To give emphasis to the action I ac-tion Pi of Samuel Doxcy was reem 4 ployed under the double title of Supervisor 4 a 1I i Super-visor of Manual Training and as principal I I princi-pal at a salary of f 1500 l The object in giving Mr Doxey this double honor U was to assure him of a good position In r any event That Is If the manual trainInG train-Ing department should be abolished for t r any reason Doxey would still be left as LI principal The Inference Is that the vacancy at the Lowell was cieated for I the purpose of caring for Mr Doxcy 1 who seems to liavo an unusually strong hold on the affections of the Board of I Kducation The fight over this proposition lasted from eight oclock In the evening till l midnight Most of the struggle took l I g place In secret session but no attempt was made to conceal what had taken II I I place The surface talk woo all for j i I V i economy It was urged that the Board I must cut somewhere It had been decided I ti 1 de-cided lo give the grade teachers their I I regular raise and this means an additional f 9 r ad-ditional expenditure of 0000 here over 1 the I present year I HOW THEY LINED UPI UP-I t t Then it was proposed to dispense with i all the supervisors except Doxey Tills Ii was ably combatted co far as Miss Pol f I lick I the primary > supervisor was concerned I i i con-cerned Nelden Henderson and Young j t ranged themselves on otic side and J plead for the retention of all the supervisors v super-visors If this could not be done they i r favored dispensing with all Giatuiue I I Newman Moyle Branting Cummings I i i and Cheesman stood by Doxey and he t was saved from the wreck under the I doubleacting anangeinent given I T above Supt ChrIstensen saved Miss tI 1 Pollock with the argument that primary L 1 pri-mary supervision was one of the most I essential things in the entire system l i Another peculiar feature of the battle F Is that while Doxey came off with fly Ing colors his three assistants Mis fi I i rl Tomllnson Miss Jcssup and Miss Cor I I bett fell by the wayside I Just fifteen minutes before midnight t t when the secret meeting broke up and r the Board was called to order In open I session It was evident that there was t L bad blood The list of grade teachers 1 as given elsewhere went through without I with-out a hitch Then tho list of principals iy b was taken up and a motion made by f Moyle that it be adopted with the one ifi 4 left oft This one was not mentioned 1 by name Nelden opposed this I r DETERMINED TO OUST HIM I I I I I dont propose to put a black mark on a mans name if I I can help It he 1 4 < said This man has been in the t F schools for many years He has done ii good work and we cant afford to take i such action as this I Moyle and Newman insisted on immediate l Im-mediate action They took tho position I that the other principals were entitled i t I to know whether they were to be employed I < em-ployed or not and that the Board could I L not afford to walt out of consideration 1 r r for the feelings of one man j1 jl I Prof Cummings moved for delay and i t 1 I t j Nelden brought out the statement from i Jl I Supt Christensen that he had practically i t i practi-cally promised Prof MoKay that no AI 7 action would be taken by the Board at I I this meeting On this understanding nqtlon on the election of principals went u I j over I I But It was understood by all present I ti that this delay was not Intended to affect 1 af-fect the case of Prof McKay It was i said In the mooting that he had been I I I asked yesterday for his resignation and ome of his strongest opponents 1 thought one day was enough time for l 1 him to get his resignation to the Board MKAY SAYS NOTHING I I I After the meeting members of the 1 Board gave out the Information that the reason for tho action against Prof t McKay was Insubordination They Id I said there was friction between him and jf Supt Christensen which would Injure 1 d the schools if the Lowell principal was 4 I I retained longer than the present year t 1 m Prof McKay has been principal In the L I Salt Lake schools for the past thirteen years and was everywhere regarded as one of the ablest and most progressive M 7 progres-sive educators in the city When seen l i i after the meeting last night he re I m 1 I fused to discuss the matter for publication IL i publi-cation ii SHAME AND DISGPACIi m I The fight in the Board meeting was N renewed when the report of the teachers 4 I f teach-ers and school work committee was 1 t presented on the supervisors The recommendation I 1l recom-mendation was that Miss Rosalie Pol lork be reemployed as supervisor of t primary work at a salary oC 1G50 and i 1 that Samuel Doxey be employed an i 1 Supervisor of Manual Training and as 3 k Principal at 51500 I i it Mr Nelden made a hard fight against I the adoption of this report I If we keep any of the supervisors p he fiuld we should keen J all I give ii you fair warning that while the board has been criticised unjustly for pome I of the things It has done It will be iii altleiscd with good reason If this report I re-port Is adopted I There is no excuse for letting out a I cultured anti refined woman like Mrs it1 Iti Elliott and keeping a great husky man A like Doxey on the payroll It you let L me out let them all out It Is a shame q j to draw the line In thlr way and I i want to go on record before this committee w com-mittee against it I any that the work 0 of the teacher and school work com I r ioo mlttee in this matter is a shame and a r i l1T disgrace i t DOXFJY RETAINED L I Newman defended the action of the I 4r committee There Is too much superviSion super-vision lie said there are too many i p cads I In the schools If ti we go on it will i 111 v toon he l necessary J to have chlronodlHltj I i i to go from school to school to fix the H IiiLLJili1 I teachers feet I nay that we should let out these supervisors when we have no further use for them We cant afford af-ford to keep them for charity Then let Doxey out Hes able to work and dont need charity put In Xelden Judge Henderson asked that the vole on Doxey and MIss Pollock be separated sepa-rated I 1 am opposed to Doxey he said because the report does not say what place he Is to fill consider all the supervisors necessary but If wo must cut off soma of them for economy let us cut off where we can save the most money The manual training department depart-ment costs 35000 and affects but 1COO children Mrs Elliott costs but HEO and she teaches all the children in the city cityThe The vote was taken on the retention of Miss Pollock and Branting Chees man Moyle Newman Young Nelden I Henderson and Glauque voted yes Cummings had departed for home and Mr Geoghegan was not prCsenL The vote was then taken on Doxey Brant Ing Cheesman Moyle Newman and Glauque voted yes and Young Nelden and Henderson voted no Both were elected THREE ASSISTANTS This did not end the struggle It was discovered that Mrs Tomllnron Miss Jessup and Miss Corbelt were not on the regular tcnchera list They are the assistants In the manual training department de-partment The information was brought out that the salaries of the tin ce ladles were 380 563 and G5 respectively re-spectively < When It was stated that these women had charge 01 the sewing Mr Chec man demanded to know what sewing had to do with manual training train-ing He voted against them He was joined by Young Nelden and Hender son Glautjue Newman Moyle and Granting voted for the retention of the three women but they = lost on a lie voteForms Forms of teachers and principals contract similar to those of last year were adopted also a form of notice to tho teachers J T Harwood and Margaret F Greet were Granted leaves of absence for one year TEACHERS REEMPLOYED The list of teachers reelected last
