Show ABATE THE PERJURER Some time ago The Tribune denounced the prevalence of perjury In our courts and the rebuke was merited But the offense will never bo cured until the courts take means to protect themselves from its evils AB long as men can go into court lie under oath and earn reward re-ward and approval for it instead of the disgrace and punishment that their conduct merits just eo long perjury will prevail and flourish But If the courts would peremptorily and severely punish the perjurer treating the offense as a contempt of court as well as deserving de-serving of criminal prosecution perjury would soon be a lost art b We are led to these reflections by tho report of a case at Fillmore where a man sued the Mammoth Mining company com-pany for the same injuries In part for which he had obtained damages from the DalyWest Mining company at Park City In opon court the witness admitted that he had lied to tho Daly West people but as the DalyWest managers man-agers did not wait suit but settled their damages promptly and without litigation that was merely lying and not parjury But the perjury came In when he admitted that on the former trial of the case then In progress he had sworn falsely It seems to us that right there would have been the proper opportunity to administer the needed I correction and discipline for It Is certain II I I cer-tain that courts cannot be protected I from this form of crime and contempt I unless they themselves take up the cudgels I |
