Office of Cudahy Packing Company ate an Early I Hour but Get No Spoils I Safeblowers made a desperate attempt at-tempt to crack the safe of the Cudahy Packing company at Third South and Third West streets early yesterday I I morning They failed to secure any I money but succeeded In demolishing the safe and leaving a pile of ruins as Ij 1 evidence of the desperate attempt BLEW OPEN THE SAFE The crime was one of the boldest and j most daring that has ever been attempted at-tempted In this city by safecrackers Nitroglycerine was used In blowing the door of the safe from Its hinges i but the Inner door which guarded the small amount of money Inside remained re-mained firm in spite of the shock Two explosions occurred both of which shook the houses in that neighborhood and woke the residents The nitroglycerine 1 nitro-glycerine was Ignited by a fuse several feet In length f THEY WERE KNOCKERS The attempt was made shortly after 1 1 oclock yesterday morning Entrance I was gained through the east window oC the packinghouse The main entrance at the front was tried and sledge hammers ham-mers were used in endeavors to batter I down the huge door The door withstood with-stood all efforts however and the bandits ban-dits were forced to attempt another means of entrance By means of a crowbar the cast window was pried from Its fastenings and the men at lat secured entrance to the office In which the safe is kept TOOLS FROM A SHOP Before going to the Cudahy place the men secured their tools at the blacksmith black-smith shop of Phil Schonert 2S South First West street The shop was broken Into and a number of hammers jimmies and other tools used for such purposes taken From the blacksmith shop they proceeded to the Cudahy Packing companys place at Third South and Third West streets t and finally secured entrance to the office USED NITROGLYCERTNE j With sledge hammers and other Instruments I In-struments the lock was broken from the safe sufficiently to hold a charge of nitroglycerine In pouring It Into the crevice it was spilt In largo quantities quanti-ties over the floor and desk of the office of-fice It was found In those places by Continued on Page 10 ATTEMPTS TO ROB SAfE Continued from Page 1 the r cp officers who Investigated yesterday morning A fuse was attached at-tached to the safe where the explosive was located DOUBLED THE DOSE The first explosion failed to Jar the door of the safe loose from Its hinges but was loud enough to shatter the wIndow panes and waken people who live in the vicinity Another charge was prepared by the cracksmen who were evidently not the least alarmed by the noise of the first explOsion The second charge was evidently much heavier than the first for it blew the door far out into the room The walls of the building shook and windows in the adjoining houses rattled FAILED TO GET MONEY Inside the outer wall of the safe Is a miniature safe In which all money nnd papers of value are kept It was battered bat-tered by the shock but Its fastenings were uninjured In the explosion Finding Find-ing the explosions of nltroglycerlne I unavailing to open the place where the money was kept the robbers pounded upon the Inside door with their hammers ham-mers but were again foiled in the attempt at-tempt NEIGHBORS WERE AROUSED Aroused by the noise of the first explosion ex-plosion a man who lives in the immediate imme-diate vicinity of the packing companys office rose and started out to Investigate Investi-gate At first he declared he thought a revolver had been fired but the report re-port was too deep and smothered Hearing the second report he rushed out and saw the office of the packing company brilliantly lighted He hastened has-tened to the nearest telephone and notified no-tified police headquarters A few minutes min-utes later when he guided the police to the place the lights had been turned oft and the room wan dark MUCH DAMAGE DONE I Evidences of tho devastation wrought I by the cracksmen were found In profusion pro-fusion by the Investigating police Panes had been shattered by the explosion ex-plosion In all the windows Chairs had been overturned and the safe was practically prac-tically demolished The men had apparently ap-parently left the place only a few moments mo-ments before the arrival of the police With the exception of a fcV papers of value and a small amount of money the safe was empty when the attempt to blow It I open was made It is the custom of the management to remove everything of value each night to prevent pre-vent a possible robbery There was a small amount of money in the suite at the time possibly HO or 50 said W H Arnold the local manager man-ager of the company It IB our custom cus-tom to removeeVbrythlng of value each night and take all the money to the bankTHIEVES THIEVES WERE EXPERT The robbers practically ruined tho safe and it Is marvelous how the smaller door withstood two such powerful pow-erful shocks The men who made tho attempt wore certainly experts and not petty thieves There was a little money In another part of the office and several things of value they could have taken If they had been eo Inclined But nothing noth-ing was found to have been taken when an investigation was made this morning We have no clue whatever but the officers are at work on the case Police officers and detectives arc convinced con-vinced that the crime was the work of experts No amateurs would have used nitroglycerine they say in the way it was used In the attempt Not a trace was left by the cracksmen and the officers offi-cers are at sea They exprcss the belief be-lief however that sufficient evidence will bo discovered today to cause the arrest of certain parties who are under surveillance |
