Show ROUTINE BUSINESS Mayors Message Received and Detail Matters Attended to at City Council Coun-cil Meeting Last Night At the meeting of tho City Council last ovenhig Mayor Thompsons message S mes-sage was read by City Recorder Xy fitrom and was listened to with Interest Inter-est Councilman Tuddenham moved that the message be received l and filed and the various recommendations referred re-ferred to the appropriate committees Councilman Robertson offered an amendment to the effect that under a suspension o the rules the message be received and filed that the reports of the various departments be referred to the appropriate committees and that the Enrollment committee be authorized author-ized to have 500 copies of the message printed The amendment carried S1MONDI FOR ASSISTANT City Recorder Nystrom submitted a report appointing A L Slmondi Assistant As-sistant City Recorder to fill the vacancy va-cancy caused by the resignation of A l Nicholson Air SlmondPs appointment ap-pointment was confirmed by the Council Coun-cil without opposition FARMERS WILLING TO BUY Land and Water Commissioner Wes terlleld reported that the farmers who twenty years ago contributed the land for the old Jordan and Salt Lake canal were now willing to buy back the land Ten years ago the canal was changed to a higher level and the old bed was abandoned running from a point south o Twelfth South through the Uta > Nursery to a point south of Fifteenth South and in parts of sections 33 28 29 and 20 There are about twentyfive acres of ground Xvhlch lfnot excavated exca-vated would be worth from 200 to 250 Ott Iom per acre The farmers are willing to pay the full value for the land less the cost of grading The Commissioner thinks It ought to bring the city 52000 The matter was referred to the Public Grounds committee with the Mayor and the Commissioner associated City Engineer Kelsey submitted the estimate of tho cost of placing head gates in the Jordan and Salt Lake City canal between Ninth and Twelfth South streets I Slxt on hcadgatcs will cost 610 replacing the rotten flumes will cost 300 and a weIr in Parleys creek will cost 125 making 1065 In all The Engineer was authorized to have the work done TO ENTERTAIN ELKS Just before the Council adjourned President Cottrell announced that he would appoint the members of tho committee that Is to assist In tho entertainment en-tertainment of the Elks durIng the convention nex summer On the suggestion SUg-gestion of R bert on the committee was Increased from five to seven and the President announced the following appoIntment Robertson Tuddenham Thomas Sharp E H Davis Fern strom and Cottrell |
