Show CARRAWAY t3OES AWAY Three Forgeries Are Charged to Him ONLY SECURED 30 ON THEM Carraway Who Is a Chemist and Mining Expert Came From Colorado Colo-rado Six Weeks Ago Made Friends Here Who Assisted Him but Is Said to Have Forged Name of W F Snyuer to Three Checks and Skipped Checks Passed on Joseph Hanak t Davis S Carraway late of Colorado bade his friends In this city a touching touch-ing adieu recently Unfortunately for me jrienus nowever iney uiun i Know it was a do when they were being touched The suggestion has already been made that Carraway should spell his name Carryaway although he didnt carry away as much as he I I might have done under more favorable I circumstances Carraway came here from Colorado about six weeks ago and applied to F M Bishop the assayer for work The young man was recommended by a prominent mining firm with whom Mr Bishop had done business and although al-though Mr Bishop had nothing for Carraway to do he evidenced a disposition dispo-sition to assist him in any way possible SEVERAL KINDS OF 1DXPBRT Carraways cards inform those who read them that he Is a mining and chemical expert which ho is and that he is a postgraduate of the Frleberg Germany school of mines exchemist and assayer at the United States customhouse cus-tomhouse and late head chemist for the Cudahy Packing company After Carraways arrival in the city James A George an assistant In Mr Bishops office sympathized with the young man by reason of the depleted condition of his purse and rendered him valuable assistance When Carra way had nothing with which to satisfy the cravings of his appetite but the balmy atmosphere and nothing with which to cover himself at night but the starry or cloudy firmament Mr George took the young man home with him and treated him like a brother Mr George also gave Carraway various small sums of money TUB TOUCHING ADIEU On December 13th Carraway secured some work at Alta from Harry Splice who Is Interested there with W F Snyder the wellknown mining man Hc returned to Salt Lake on Friday lost and In the meantime Mr George had secured a place for him at Gold Mountainand gave him 10 with which to defray his expenses there This was the last time that George saw Carra way The same night Carraway went into Joseph Hanaks saloon on the corner of First South and Commercial streets and secured SlO from the night bartender bar-tender on a check ostensibly signed by W F Snyder The following evening Carraway dropped in again and repeated re-peated the performance with another 10 check signed as before and on Sunday Sun-day night he went in and borrowed 10 on a check for 150 also ostensibly signed by Snyder Two of the checks were on McCornick Co and the other was on the Commercial National CHECKS SAID TO BE FORGERIES It was not until Monday that Mr Hanak discovered that the checks were worthless and at the same Lime lie learned that Carraway had disappeared disap-peared The police were then informed as to the matter but no trace of Car raway has been found Mr Snyder when asked with respect to the matter yesterday said that he had not seen the checks but that ho knew them to be forgeries as he had not issued any to Carraway Carraway attended church services frequently at St Marks cathedral while in Salt Lake and it is said that Dean Eddie extended favors in the way of assisting him to find something to doAs As Carraway is a chemist of ability his friends here who were willing to assist as-sist him until he secured permanent employment are ata loss to account for his actions |
