was raised upon a farm and educated in the common schools of New York State and at the Marion Collegiate Institute of Wayne county later graduating from the Michigan university law school with the class of 1S71 Ho was the Democratic candidate candi-date for the New York Legislature in 1S73 from the Western district ot Wayne county and was defeated by T Y Ycomans a brotherinlaw of ex President Cleveland Judge Powers began be-gan the practice of law In Kalamazoo Mich In 1S73 and from then until 1885 was a delegate to every Democratic State convention of Michigan and part of the time chairman of the Democrat county committee of Kalamazoo county coun-ty He was elected City Attorney of Kalamazoo In 1S7C He was the Democratic Demo-cratic nominee for Congress from the Fourth district of Michigan in 1SSO but was defeated by 1 J C Burrows later Senator from Michigan although Judge Powers polled the largest Democratic vote ever before cast in that district Ho was one of the four delegates at large from Michigan to the Democratic National convention of 1SS4 and helped organize the celebrated Hendrlck stampede He was again elected City Attorney of Kalamazoo In 1SS5 and in April of that year was appointed Associate As-sociate Justice for Utah He resigned in the spring of 1SSC but held tho office until August of that year He began the practice of law In Salt Lake in 18S7 He was made chairman of the Liberal party In 18SS and held that position posi-tion until the division on party lines He was elected a delegate to the Democratic Demo-cratic National convention of IS92 by the Liberal party but his opponent was seated He was elected to the Territorial Legislature In 1893 and in 1895 was unanimously chosen chairman chair-man of the Democratic Stale committee of Utah being reelected in 189G He was again a delegate to the National convention In 1896 and during the campaign cam-paign of that year slumped Illinois Iowa Nebraska and Wyoming at the request of the Democratic National commlteoHe announced himself asa as-a candidate for United Stales Senator in 1896 but later withdrew his name He was again a candidate at the sessIon ses-sion of the last Legislature A H Tarbet A H Tarbet nominee for Presidential Presi-dential elector was born In Iowa City Ia on the day of the battle of Bull Run July 21 1SG1 He came to Utah In 1R7fwlh liis rmrrmfK nml the Anaconda Ana-conda Mining company Alone lime he was also connected with and part owner in the Colusa mine now owned 1 L by the Boston Montana Copper company com-pany While Interested In Montana mining Mr Tarbct took a course at the Colorado State School of Mines Later he became Interested In the Center Star mine at Rossland B G finally parting with his holdings for SSOOOOO Mr Tarbet las resided permanently per-manently In Salt Lake since 891but prior to that time resided for a number of years In MonUina He is still largely large-ly interested in mining Mr Tarbct was a delegate to the recent Democratic Demo-cratic City National convention at Kansas I C Thorcsen I C Thorcgon one of the nominees for Presidential elector was born In I Chrlsllanla Norway May 2 1852 and carnoAvitU his nominee for Attorney General was born at West Point laIn la-In 1859 and graduated from the Iowa Wcsleyan college In 1889 After graduating graduat-ing Mr Weber was editor for a time o the West Point la Appeal and later was connected with the Albla Ia Democrat In 1882 he began to read law and later admitted lawand two years was to the bar Mr Weber came to Utah In 1SS9 and set led at Ogden where heat he-at once began to take an Interest In politics In 1892 he was elected County Attorney of rebel county serving two years and being reelected In 1891 In 1855 he was the Democratic nominee for the same office to which he now aspires but went down to defeat with tho remainder re-mainder of the State ticket Robert C Lund Few men In the Slate are better known than Robert C Lund of St George Washington county candidate for Treasurer Bob Lund ns he Is mostly called Mr Lund waa born In New Diggings Wis opposite Galena May r 29 1817 He came to Salt Lake In 1850 and lived here for sixteen years when his father was nlcd In 1SGG to go down south to settle Dixie There the family sellled In St George and R C Lund there began his business busi-ness career which developed into the big firm 0 Vole Lund Judd and he was prominently Identified In mining and business In Arizona Nevada Ne-vada and Utah From time to lime Mr Lund held all the important offices In j his county which he represented In the I Legislature He was Mayor of St I George and chairman of the Board of County Commissioners at different I limes For twelve years he has been a member of the Slate Board of Equali zation He was one of the projectors and Is now a director of the Utah Pacific N T Porter N T Porter nominee for Slate Superintendent of Public Instruction Instructon was born In Ccntcrvllle Utah where he now resides October 2 1865 his parents being pioneers of M7 and among the first setters of Davis county I coun-ty He graduated from the Normal department de-partment of the University of Utah in laS and took the degree of Bachelor of Ars from the same institution in 1900 Art was employed In the district schools from 1SS5 to 18D3 as teacher and principal and studied and inspected in-spected the public school systems of Europe during the years from 1S93 to 1895 He is at present County Superintendent Superin-tendent of Schools of Davis county and president of the College and Normal Nor-mal Alumni association of the U of U He was a member of the text book convention of 1896 and chairman of the committee which formulated the present pres-ent course of study for the public schools of the State Mr Porter is regarded I re-garded as an excellent public speaker and carried off the honors In the recent re-cent debate between teams from the University of Utah and the University of Nevada Henry N Hayes Henry N Hayes candidate for State Auditor was born In Pleasant Grove once called Battle Creek In Utah y county in 1867 and there he remained until he was 20 years of age He graduated from the Brigham Young academy in 1887 and afterward taught school at Salina and was Superintendent Superintend-ent of Schools of Scvler county for several sev-eral years He has also been at the head of the High school at Richfield In the fall of 1S9S he was elected County Clerk of SevIer county which position he now holds |
