Show I TRIBUTE PROM A TROOPER Colored Man who Bared His Head as the Cortege Passed The small flakes of snow fell softly Slowly and in time to the dirge played by the band at the head which was followed by tho veterans of the G A R the funeral cortege of the late Dr Holland moved Crowds lined the sidewalks side-walks on either side Many of the spectators were people from the country coun-try to whom a funeral with a band of music and the G A R especially on a Sunday afternoon was an attraction afernoon atracton Reaching State street the band and the veterans formed a double column and as the hearse bearing the remains passed every man who was In the procession pro-cession uncovered and the flag was slightly lowered The crowds on the sidewalks looked on wonderlngly but one IJa was a colored trooper from the fort and as soon as he caught sight o the veterans his cap was removed re-moved and he stood at attention as Immovable as a statue He made a picturesque figure The wide yellow striped on his trousers were accentuated accentu-ated by the yellow lining of his cape and it was noticeable that among all the tnrong he was the only man to uncover un-cover Slowly went on the cortege The notes of the band faded away In the distance Then were the kinky hairs covered by the cap I do not even know the name of the nan who was In the hearse he said a terward but I do know that he was a member of the Grand Army of the In Grand Republic and I suppose that he must have had something at least to do with the freeing 0 the slaves But suppose he did not Oh well I know the boys who wear the G A R badge When they treat a man like that > It Is safe to say that he Is all right Without those kind of men weuns would have been In a bad fix today I can tell you |
