Show REED SMOOT THE NEW APOSTLE Provo Man Elevated to Membership in the Twelve to Succeed the Late Franklin D Richards y c 1 H r I I > I J p A j rg p c I I i I r S I1I P II I I I 3 I 1 J 141 l4br S 4L v 17 I tit r I H 1 I r l x lr l r Reed Smoot of Provo was yesterday elevated to an apostleship of the Mormon Mor-mon church to fill the vacancy which has existed since the death of President Presi-dent Franklin D Richards i Although the selection of Mr Smoot will doubtless meet with unqualified approval wherever he is 1 known his I elevation came as a big surprise not only to conference attendants but to Mr Smoot as well This is a result of the fact that It has been presumed for months past that Lc Rol C Snow the youngest son of President Lorenzo Snow was to bo selected to fill the vacancy It Is well known that President Snow deslrea the elevation of his son to an apostleship but as the young man Is now In constant attendance upon his father it has been deemed best to defer his appointment until some other more opportune time SKETCH OF APOSTLE SMOOT Apostle Reed Smoot was born In Salt Lake City on January 10 1SC2 In the Twentieth ward where James Sharps residence now slands HIs father was the late Abram O Smoot I who was the second Mayor Salt Lake ever had and who In 1SCS was appointed ap-pointed president of Utah stake In 1872 the lad removed wl h his fathers family to Provo where he has resided ever since He graduated from Brig I ham Young Academy In 1SSO and went Into business Young Smoot was placed I In charge of the ProVo Coop at the ago of 18 owing to the natural busl nes talent that manifested itself In him and In 1SSI ho was made superintendent super-intendent of the Provo wollen mills a position he still holds That Apostle Smoot has attained to an high estimation estima-tion In the business community at Provo Is further evidenced in the fact that he Is president of the Provo Commercial Com-mercial Savings bank and vice president of the First National bank Apostle Smoot married in 1SS4 Miss Alpha May daughter of the late Horace S Eldredge by whom he has I fivo children two sons and three I daughters He has been a staunch and vigorous worker In the Mormon church and has given to its support his best endeavor en-deavor In 1S90 Mr Smoot went to England on a mission and the following fol-lowing year traveled over most of the continent of Europe Ho was then recalled re-called bv a telegram from President Woodruff because of his fathers serious Illness In 1S95 tho year of his fathers death Mr Smoot was appointed second sec-ond counselor to the president of Utah I stake which position he has held ever since CAME AS A SURPRISE In a brief talk Inst evening with a Tribune representative Apostle Smoot stated Jhat his appointment was an entlro surprise to him a statement which Mrs Smoot and Mrs Eldredge who were present Immediately substantiated sub-stantiated The Apostle said the first Intimation he had of his promotion was at noon yesterday when a messenger from the presidents olllcc stated he was wanted over there On reporting at the office President Snow announced an-nounced his appointment to an Apostleship and Mr Smoot accepted As to what special duties may be assigned to me Ajiostle Smoot added I can not say There are no particular particu-lar lines of work assigned that I know of to members of the quorum of the twelve but such as may come up In the regular course of church work But of course whatever is assigned to me Twill T-will do Ve will continue to live in Provo If my appointment necessitates a vacancy in the Utah stake presidency presi-dency It will probablybe filled at the quarterly conference to be held shortly short-ly Apostle Smoot takes his honors modestly but has been widely and heartily congratulated He said the impression was that Le Rol Snow was to be the fortunate man and he had rather looked for that appointment Apostle Smoot was prominently mentioned In connection with the Republican Re-publican nomination for Congress at the sneclal election but declined to allow his name used |
