Show LIFEENDED BY BULLET W J Montgomery Dies by His Own Hand HAD INCURABLE DISEASE Being Afflicted With Kidney Trouble and Convinced that He Could Not BecoVcr Mr liTontgomery Yesterday Yester-day Sent a Bullet Into His Brain and Died Instantly HadLived in Utah Many Years Left Note of Explanation Funeral Will Take Place at lit Olivet Today Weakened and emaciated from Intense In-tense suffering and discouraged because be-cause his disease was Incurable W J Montgomery a mining stock broker ended his existence yesterday morning at 815 oclock by shooting himself in the bead at his residence 4S5 Second street Mr Montgomery had been afflicted af-flicted with Brlghts disease for nearly a year and during the mist four months had been confined to the house while his suffering has been almost Iniolera I j ble In addition to the pain Incident to his filiation Mr Montgomery has been subject to Insomnia often being unable to sleep more than an hour or two during the night Only recently had Mr Montgomery realized that his disease was incurable since which time he had discontinued taking medicine I I cine and while he showed disappointment disappoint-ment and discouragement he gave no J indications of committing the act which ended his lifeJust before the tragedy Mr Montgomery requested his wife to get him some breakfast and she at once proceeded to do so DISCOVERY OF THE BODY Returning In a little whiie to his room with his meal Mrs Montgomery was somewhat Kinprised that her bus band was not there She Immediately began a search and was horrified to find him lying dead on the floor of the bathroom with a pillow under his head and a S3callber Smith AVcsPon revolver re-volver by ills side A servant was sent for W If Shearman of the Commercial National hank a cousin of Mrs Montgomery Mont-gomery who lives but a short distance awav I Mr Shearman came Immediately nnd summoned other friends when the distracted dis-tracted wife was cared for and the hotly of tho dead man was taken in charge That tim deed was premeditated and carried out with deliberation there can be no duiiljt The bullet filtered the right side of his head just over the oar a llttlo back of the temple and death was Instantaneous Instanta-neous On entering the bathroom Mr I Montgomery had closed the door so that no report was heard and no warn lug was given until the body was found < by his wifo 1 I NOTE TO THE CORONBP Among some papers of easy access there was a found a letter from Mr Montgomery to his wife a will direct I Ing the disposition of his properly and j a note on the bark of which was In dorsed For the Coroner and which I read as followti Salt Lake Juno 27 1503 To Whom It May Concern My reasons for the action which closes my earthly existence are brlellv as follov That becoming satisfied that my dlseaso has reached an Incurable singe and Hint It In only n question of a short time till Us fatal determination a time of anxiety amid discomfort to mv friends of frlpht ful misery to myself anti of total physical collapse to my dour attendant m > wife T rlilnlr It I liner imrlni till ilin 1 M M U r c to end the suspense and think I am do Inff the wisest naIl best thbitf for all con ccmcd V J MONTGOMERY Acting Coroner Kroeger was called but after an Investigation decided that an inquest was not necessary LIVED HERE MANY YEARS The deceased was born near Belfast Ireland August 20 1S39 and was brought to America by his parents when he was only G months old He came to Utah Jn 1S66 and has since resided in Salt Lake He has been ac tively engaged during most of his resi dence here in promoting mining Interests I Inter-ests and for many years was identified with the Ontario Mining copipany for which he made many trips to New York city and other Eastern points He leaves a wife to whom he was married mar-ried some twenty years ago but no children He has relatives at Hartford Conn DR MACHRANS STATEMENT Dr McAchran whose patient Mont ornery had bean since December last said yesterday that while he was shocked beyond measure at the act of his h friend he could not say that he was totally unprepared for It There never was a man afflicted with a din ease who watched bin own case as closely as did Montgomery Instead of taking blindly the word of his physi lan as to the nature of the disease he read up quite extensively on the dis ease Its characteristics treatment and probable fatality No doctor more carefully watched a patient than did tho diseased watch himself In many cases he would anticipate the doctor by telling him In just what condition he was and was nearly always correct There Is no question us he says in his note that he kne > v he had but a short time to live anyway and preferred what he considered to be the easiest way to get rid of his troubles The funeral servlccn to be conducted by Dean Eddie of St Marks cathedral will be held at the residence this af ternoon at 1 oclock The Interment which will be private will follow at Mount Olivet cemetery |
