Show DRMENNAS FUNERAL Great Outpouring of Sorrowing Sorrow-ing Friends r SILENT AND SPOKEN TRIBUTES With Sweet and Solemn Ceremonies Remains of the Unfortunate PhySician Phy-sician Were Laid Away in Calvary Cemetery Rich and Poor Alike Were Mourners Eloquent Words I of Rev Father Keonnn Hundreds Unable to Enter the Cathedral Magnificent Floral Offerings t Tho body of the late Dr Patrick J McKenna reposes In the consecrated soil of the Roman Catholic cemetery The rites that preceded the interment at 330 yesterday afternoon were noticeable no-ticeable by reason of their beautyand their solemn pathos Appreciative and eloquent wero the worda of the clergyman clergy-man bright were the hues and fragrant fra-grant the odors of those sweet symbols of the resurrection thc flowers and sweeter yet were the liquid melodies with which human voices repeated the promises of life to come but more I eloquent than all were the trembling lips the dewy eyes and the broken I words of the poorlyclad and callous handed mourners 11 lingered on the outskirts of the crowd and uttered to one another the most worthy tribute that the living can pay to the dead Tales of generous deed of kindly and encouraging words of care and sympathy sym-pathy for the afflicted that caused a tightening in the throat and moisture a 110lsture in the eyes of even the stranger who overheard HUNDREDS WERE PRESENT Tho funeral cortege from the Keogh McKenna hospital was met at the corner cor-ner of South Temple and West Tempi by Helds band Salt Lake lodge No S6 B P O E and the Knights ot Columbus at 2 p in A dirge was played as the procession headed by Capt W W Hall mounted and Chief of Police Hilton with a platoon ot twelve police officers polee ofcers moved south to First South and east to State There the Elks opened their ranks and stood with bared heads as the hoarse and carriages passed between toward St Marys cathedral Those who marched formed but a small proportion of thc crowd that wended Its sorrowful way to the cathedral Hundreds who were unable to afford carriages and belonged be-longed to no order walked slowly along the sidewalks and gathered In front of the church The edifice was full to overflowing even before the procession arrived A few seats had been reserved for the medical fraternity frater-nity and the members of the two orders or-ders to which the deceased belonged but only a few of the favored ones succeeded in gaining an entrance to the building Floral offerings flllod the entire front of the church the most conspicuous pieces being a magnificent mag-nificent floral blanket the S1 at the KeoghMcKenna hospital a huco ereseenf find lvrf > of FOSPR nm lilies from tho new lodge l of Elks a t Park City which Dr McKenna assisted I assist-ed In Instituting the night beore his fatal fall from the train a clock in white and purple blossoms with tho hands Indicating the 1 oclock toast To Our Absent Brothers from thc local Elks a cross and crown from the Knights of Columbus and an anchor r an-chor from the physicians of the city FATHER KEENANS TRIBUTE Deep evidences of feeling appeared in the tribute of Rev Father Keenan who delivered the funeral address I n the mldat of life we are In deathhe began but death he declared is the portal through which all must pass to that hereafter which will be either an eternity of happiness or an otcr nlty of misery Ha urged his hearers to so live that they would not fear to die The Ideal Christian ha said Is an honest man thc noblest work of God and Patrick J McKenna was an I honest man His cole object in leo wan to do good to minister to the humble as well as to the proud to the poor as well ao to the rich Sup presad sobs and furtive tears attested the truth of the clergymans words of praise He wao every mans friend and every man was hiD friend continued con-tinued Father Keenan I dare lnued oay he had not an enemy In the world He was loved by his brother physicians and belpved by the orders of which he was n member The musical portion of the service consisted of n selection by the choir as the coskot was borne Into the church Nearer My God To Thee sung by the choir solo Angels Ever Bright and Fair and Lead Kindly Light mr nul by the choir as the mourners u The caaket was not opened at the cathedral the Intimate friends having been permitted to view the remains before they left the hospital The pallbearers bearers were from the ranks of the late physicians professional associates asso-ciates Doctors Wlloher Fishier S Whitney Ewing Benedict and Baldwin winRav Rev Keenan offered n prayer just before the remains were consigned to the bosom o earth the clods fell on the pine box containing the coffin and the grieving friends turned away realizing rea-lizing that the world had lost one of Us benefactors when the great warm heart of Dr McKenna was stilled |
