should and no doubt will prove one of thc most Interesting departments of your valuable newspaper 1 want to call attention In my first communication to the fact that The Tribunes appeal of a fortnight since for an improvement or the citys sanitary sani-tary condition has not yet been heeded Shall we wait till the new City Council Is Installed in January or will the present city fathers move No use locking the stable after the horse Is gone Now is the time for action EXOFFICIAL Connect Salt Lake and Ogden Editor Tribune It has been suggested sug-gested that n combination of capital belonging to Ogden and Salt Lake City might readily be secured to connect I the two cities by trolley The dummy line could be extended and In operation I within ninety days or a now line constructed con-structed All propertyowners along the route would take stock for their Interests would be greatly advanced That could easily be made the String I townonthePJko Both cities want the connection Why doesnt some one take the step OGDEN BANKER I Ogden Utah Nov 29th I Stop the Beastly Smoke Editor Tribune The words I have I employed in the caption of this communication com-munication are the ones my wife used to a city official before we were in I i Salt Lake City an hour We arc I strangers here came to see your beautiful and enterprising city and probably make an Investment But by Jovel this smoke is terrible Think of housekeeping here Cant some one stop It I dont mean to advocate the I Injury of anyones business but how about using hard soal or smoke consumers I con-sumers My linen looks an hour after donning it like I worked In a coal mine STRANGER I Real Estate Investments Editor TrlbuneI had a controversy the other day with a landlord a to the desirability of real estate Investments in Salt Lake City I contended that ninetenths of the mbney now Invested In-vested In business property netted over 8 per cent and the growth In value of the property was as much more that residences paid or would if properly proper-ly purchased and handled nearly as much more The landlord contended that my llgures should be shaded 10 per cent A very Interesting article on this subject could bo prepared by ho Tribune Propertyowners and theta the-ta records could testify or give good information A L P Sail Lake City Nov 30th Have We Cold Storage Editor Tribune I hue carefully looked over the advertising columns oC The Tribune and have made inquiry for a cold storage where I could deposit de-posit a few dozen ducks and geese I cillcd on Bear river and also where I could deposit some clothing and I have been told there la no such thing In the city We need lots of cold storage GEORGE G GENTZ City Filth Again Editor Tribune In a liveminute walk down town yesterday I saw two scarlet fever and one smallpox signs Vnd I saw a dead cat a lot of vegetable table matter old shoes and filth galore ga-lore on vacant lots The streets at time swim In mud and there should bo an absence of all decaying matter Our City Cuncll should move I dont want my children to die from neglect of those in responsible positions posi-tions A MOTHER Salt Lake City Nov 30th The Church Announcements Editor TribuneIn response to your suggestion In Fridays Issue regarding The Peoples Forum I raise the I question as to the desirability of In I sorting the Church Appointments column In the Saturday Issue instead of the Sunday paper Usually thcae 1 announcements take up a full column and certainly are of Interest to a largo number of your readers Leaving out oC view for the present t the ethical side of the custom so far as It relates to the churches It seems to me that a interval of a day succeeding suc-ceeding the publication or church no tlcos would afford the public an oppor tunity of givIng more thought to the matter than under the present arrangement ar-rangement Furthermore the practice of metropolitan metro-politan papers In cities like Philadelphia Philadel-phia New York and Chicago which I Insert church announcements In Saturdays I Sat-urdays Issue must be based upon reasons sons oC practical utility Anyway It I might be Interesting to elicit the lewD of the churchgoing public on this matter mat-ter Yours right tub I JGEORGE BAILEY Sail Lake City Utah Nov 30th I It Is more appropriate to print the I church announcements on Sunday the person who is looking on Sunday morning especially the stranger within our gates for a place to worship wor-ship that morning doesnt want to have to look up a paper of the day before to find the places Editor Tribune i Opposed to Water Litigation Editor Tribune Apropos of the agitation agi-tation that is ndw taking place regarding re-garding the question oC Salt Lake City and others commencing suit against I Utah county farmers on the water question I desire to say as a taxpayer tax-payer here that I think this matter l ought to be approached very cautiously r cautious-ly if Indeed It Is to be undertaken all lest we find ourselves in the position po-sition of u late distinguished candidate candi-date trying to rectify the remedies that Wont remedy From a lawyers standpoint and asa as-a first blush Impression merely I desire to say that a suit brought I against these farmers and property I property holders of Utah county In thc way In dictated would measurably if not wholly fall as the farmers would setup set-up the seven years user law and would undoubtedly urge other reasons why Utah lake cannot be used as i reservoir in the way Intended Before therefore suit involving property rights of the aluof sixtyseven million dollars or any fraction thereof I there-of Is started I wish to see all other remedies exhausted Besides this loo we have already expended too much money In lawsuits Involving the citys rights to water that have thus far appeared to be comparative failures The question for present municipal statesmanship Is not how can we spend more money but how can we reduce needless expenses and lower 1C possible the tax rate On this water wa-ter question too I think there has grown up an undue apprehension as to the sufficiency of the supply When we take into consideration tho volume of water coming Into the city from City creek Parleys Canyon creek the Jordan and Salt Lake canal etc and the force with which it flows we will sec it Is large I thc water was properly used there Is ample for a city of 100000 people The city solons and olllcers however should see that twothirds of it Is not allowed to run to waste In the taps of large buildings llveryatablcs hy iih LntS etc f By these statements I am not argu r arg I Ing that we should not consistently r Increase our supply by rules of amity and fairness at natural reservoirs a Utah lake by filing notices no-tices of surplus water etc I simply mean to say that at this time there Is no need of extraordinary expense r our city is to grow we not only need more wagepaying1 concerns located I lo-cated within and near its limits such as canning factories pickle factories etc but above all we should have a low tax rate as people seeking homes here will take this matter into consideration consid-eration atthe Verythreshold r their inquiries And In order to make our tax rate lower than it Is It Is incumbent Incum-bent that our city officers not only do not expend money for doubtful law cases but that they see that In all departments of the city and this also should apply to the county that I there Is no superfluous help that the head oC each coordinate department of the city should take his coat off I and work during office hours as well ns his assistants I this Is I done with the advantages wo have of water being be-ing supplied to us by force of gravitation gravi-tation and electrical power of our city I generated by the name force our lax rate should be lower than in many Eastern cities Yours truly I HARRINGTON DAN S HARINGTON Salt Lake City Nov 30th |
