Show THE SOUTHERN PACIFIC CUTOFF That wns a good square talk in The Tribune yesterday morning by a Southern Pacific olllclal He evidently knew what he was talking about Hla explanation showed that the late President Huntington of the Southern Pacific was determined to stick as close to the old line by way of the Promontary as It was possible to do Ire recognized evidently that the line over the ridge would have to be abandoned aban-doned as exacting requirements not practicable In modern railroading But he wouldnt go far away he would pile for miles over the arms of the lake and would have an ohline on the level from the west shore to near Ogden How Impossible this Is nsa practicable proposition the Southern Pacific ofllclal pointed out In a few words the advice of the Southern Pacific Pa-cific engineers has been followed and they have pronounced the across the lake scheme to be Impracticable for the reason that they would encounter a maximum depth in the lake at the present level of twentysevenfeet and i I the possible maximum of fortytwo feet in case the lake should rise and the engineers In New York pronounced It beyond the range of possible projects pro-jects and entirely too dangerous Accordingly Ac-cordingly the directors ordered the surveys from Lucln to this city by way of the south shore of the lake The Tribune a short time ago sent Its representative to see what the surveyors sur-veyors of this line were doing and ho learned from them the facts as above stated that the lake cutoff was to be abandoned and the line changed to run down the southwest shore of the lake along the south border and thence to this city When this line has been completed and the other cutoff cut-off made heretofore specified in The Tribune and yesterday morning confirmed con-firmed by the Southern Pacific official we have been quotingthe cutoff to wit from Ulntah or above to Kays ville and so down here the whole route amended will be short and convenient conven-ient and in the line of modern track ago Improvement The skies are bright for great railroad additions jand beh torments Utah the present season |
