Investigations Investiga-tions made by Councilman AVhittemore and Health Commissioner King In regard I re-gard to the now crematory which ILls 1 proposed to erect very soon for the consumption i con-sumption of the citys garbage In place of the crematory destroyed by fire was I presented to the City Council last evening c even-ing by Mr Whlttemore Dr Kings estimate of the cost of disposing of tho I garbage when the old crematory was working was SI cents per ton while he I says that with amodern Incinerator the cost could be reduced to about 2 cents atonlho most modern Incinerators Incin-erators consume the garbage without coal or other fuel the garbage being dried sufficiently In one chamber of the apparatus to render It combustible when it reaches he furnace The report re-port contains the result of Investigations Investiga-tions by Councilman Whlttemore of the Systems In operation In San Francisco Fran-cisco and Portland and concludes with the recommendation that the remains I of the old plant be abandoned and anew I a-new modern incinerator be constructed close to the center of the city of a capacity I ca-pacity adequate to the demands of a city of 100000 Inhabitants Such an Incinerator would cost between 20000 and 25000 The report was referred to the Committee on Sanitary Rules and Quarantine GARBAGE NUISANcE Benjamin II llolllngworth and fifty one others presented a communication that the dumping of city garbage west of the Jordan river near North Temple street which has been done since the destruction of the crematory was becoming be-coming an Intolerable nuisance The petitioners asked that It be remedied I Referred to the Committee on Sanitary Rules and Quarantine MOUNTAIN RESORT AGGRESSIVE A communication was received from the Mountain Summer Resort company I stating that the city had wrongfully and without right interfered with the companys free use of its quota ot water I wa-ter from Parleys creek and demanding that the city at once remove the obstructions ob-structions alleged to have been placed In the ditch by the qltys employees ao that the company may enjoy the full quantity of water It claims to be entitled en-titled to Referred to the Committee on elated Finance with City Attorney asso LAIRD ASKS A FAVOR Edward Laird whose land and water right In Parleys canyon the city recently I re-cently purchased requested through Councilman Canning to Ue allowed to keep a number of cattle on the farm to utilize the feed there during the fall and winter The deed to the property c I has not yet passed and Canning said that Laird was not allowed the privilege I privi-lege he asked he was liable to go back on the deal Robertson said the city didnt care whether Laird backed out of his bargain bar-gain or not that if he did he would lethe le-the greater loser On motion of Robertson Rob-ertson the matter was referred to the Committee on Finance with the Mayor associated AGREEMENT RATIFIED The report of the Committee on Municipal Mu-nicipal Laws recommending that the Mayor and City Attorney be authorized to enter into an agreement with the Salt Lake City Water and Electric Power company by which the company may use for driving its power wheels water owned by the city In the Jordan river and return tho same into the river was adopted On recommendation of the Committee on Municipal Laws the City Recorder was instructed to notify the General Land office at Washington that the Council approved of the proposition for the creation of forest reserves of the public lands embraced the watershed water-shed of the streams from which the city derives its water supply TO KEEP THE WATER PURE The Committee on Jordan Canal and Irrigation presented an ordinance with a recommendation that It be passed for the prevention of befouling any of the streams from which the city derives de-rives Its water supply l The measure It Is said Is necessary at this time on account of campers pitching their tents so near the streams in the canyons can-yons that contamination oC the water results The proposed ordinance makes It unlawful to establish I camp corral stable or other outhouse nearer than sixty feet to any of the streams within with-in ten miles of the city Referred to the Committees on Laws CANAL PEOPLE WANT A CONFERENCE CON-FERENCE City Engineer Kelsey submitted n communication stating that at a meetIng meet-Ing of the canal L presidents held last Saturday It was decided to meet with the City Council or a committee of the Council on Tuesday August 21st at 10 a m to discuss the
