Show k I DR BEATTY DISSENTS TRENCHANT CRITICISM OF DR HAYOS POSITION Ho Thinks Mayo Should Have Postponed Post-poned tho Publication of His Cone Con-e Dr Goisey Appointed Secretary JBcatty of the State Board of Health said yesterday regarding the view taken by Quarantine Officer Mayo at Monday nights Medical society meeting I regret that another engagement I en-gagement prevented mo from being present at the mcelng of the society In view of the fact that t the health I authorities have bcen already scrlousil i handicapped by doubt on the part dt I many as to the nature oC the disease that hns prevailedin an epidemic foim throughout the State It Is particularly unfortunate that Di Mayo should hac seen lit to add to the dlfllcultles and further endanger the public health by i furnishing people an apparent medical I warrant for disregarding strict quaran I tine precautions against the disease While he observes that It Is I contagious and advises quarantine measures ho must know that people will not heed thorn If they believe the disease to DP other than smallpox When such gioc public IntetcatH arc at stake a man should be very careful before he takes a position absolutely In opposition to I that oC the entire profession to which he belongs Especially Is this true In I the present Instance Dr Mayo admits that he has had absolutely no experience with smallpox before this and has scon only thirty two cases of tIme prevailing dlsens He does not hesitate however to pub I licly proclaim that In his opinion Profs Hyde and Welch and others of the most eminent authorities In the United States who have seen thousands of cases of smallpox during this and former epidemics are entirely wrong In incir diagnosis as arc also time entire body of physicians and heaHh olllcors throughout the country who have had to contend with the disease for the past two years Ml has been as apparent to them as to Dr Mayo that the disease has boon of an unusually mild typo but this has not deceived them Into mistaking its character of which there lias been no question In this connection JC would remind Dr Mayo that there have been four deaths from smallpox In this State I I during tim epidemic and many cases i of the severe confluent dlsense and to my knowledge it number of the latter cases have boon left badly pined I have no doubt as to the honesty of the I doctors convictions but could have I Dialled that ho might at loiial have i postponed the publication of his conclu I I slons until he had ah opportunity to study the question more fully and examined ex-amined Into more of tx eases which have occurred I fool sure had he done this ho would have arrived at a different differ-ent opinion |
