Show AS IN 1864 I Platforms are supposed to represent the will of the party At the same time people ought to keep in mind several Important facls that have been taught them by experience There has not been a Democratic platform since the celebrated one of 1S64 that has not read better than the present one In that platform of 1SCI the party declared de-clared that the war then In progress was n failure demanded r dishonorable dishon-orable truce that those In rebellion against the Government might win by manipulations that which they had failed to gain through their unparalleled unparal-leled courage The people repudiated them They did It too when every home In the North was In mourning and when the clouds in the sky had hardly a rift of sunshine to dispel their awful darkness In the same spirit this present platform denounces all aJt that has been done in the last four years asks for a truce that some further fur-ther dishonorable settlements may be made and we susr > ect that the same conclusion will be reached by the people peo-ple that wns reached thirtysix years ago becauso some other facts have been developed in the meantime the most prominent one of which is lhat In all that time the people cannot think o one measure which the Democracy Dem-ocracy has favored which would have been good could it have been carried out with the single exception of the silver plank of four years ago And they can see further that when tried the party has demonstrated its inability inabili-ty tc handle tie affairs of this great Republic either wIth honor to ilsclf or profit to the people Notwithstanding the cry In the platform there Is not a man in the country who believes that under Republican government his liberties lib-erties would be interfered with and he docs not believe that the liberties of any other man would be interfered with Under the Republican Administration Admin-istration there are 25 per cent more men at work than were at work under the last Democratic administration And there is not a worklngmau In the country 1 who believes his clmAceu for permanent employment would not he Jeopardized by changing back lthe lawlessness and the Incompelencc I of tho Democratic party There are five million farms In the United States Four years ago the men on at least 1500000 of these farms were In despair I would bo hard to convince one of them that his condition would be improved Im-proved by a change for he has seen in the last three years since the Ro publican party came into power his farm advance 10 per cent In value and with I all lhat the farm can produce We take It that the farmer vole will decide the election this year and that Jt will be bad for the party which holds I so many hopes to the lips of the American I Amer-ican people and which Invariably when It has had an opportunity has broken those hopes to their hearts |
