Show MINERS AWFUL INJURY Almost Blown to Pieces by Giant Powder I l LOST LEG HAND AND EYE I I I Tho Victim is Thomas Lindstrom a Miner in the Employ of the Old Telegraph Explosion Occurred while He was Handling Giant PowderInjured Man was Brought Ito I-to Salt Lake on a Special Train after which One Leg a Hand and an Eye were Removed I A shocking accident which resulted from a mysterious explosion of giant powder occurred in the Old Telegraph mine at Bingham early yesterday morning As the result Thomas Llnd strom miner formerly of Finland lies at the Keoghriosmer hospital In the most critical condition From the dreadful effects of the explosion the surgeons at the hospital found it necessary neces-sary to reinovo the victims right eye and amputate a hand and a leg It Is barely possible that the left eye may be saved providing the unfortunate man recovers Ho was brought to the city by a special train on the Rio Grande Western yesterday morning and at the hospital everything possible for his comfort is bflng done Superintendent 1 P Turner of the Old Telegraph mine rvune to the city with the Injured num and last evening gave an account of the accident as far as could be gleaned Llndstorm who is I 16 j years of ago had been working In the mlnevslnco Novmber but has been in tins country several year EXPLOSION WAS MYSTERIOUS I Ldndstorm was on the night shift and yesterday morning at 110 oclock was In the Grecian Bend tunnel of the Old Telegraph F JO Turner night foreman fore-man was talking to him about five minutes before the accident Lindstrom went into a drift to get some giant powder and the explosion was heard Turner and others rushed In as they I knew something was wrong They I heard the man calling out loudly and I succeeded in taking him out when it was found that he had been most horribly I hor-ribly mangled cut and bruised by the force of the shock At the minehouse when he eam < to milllclently to speak I r he told Superintendent Turner that ho I had taken three sticks of powder and as he reached for the fourth he I explosion ex-plosion took place TRIP TO SALT LAKE Superintendent Turner had Dr Straup called at once and the latter after dressing the wounds advised the Immediate removal to Salt Lake As soon as possible Superintendent Turner Tur-ner secured a special train by telegraph tele-graph and left at 1020 n m arriving I arriv-ing here at 1120 a m Lindstrom was taken to the KeoghIJosmer hospital I I where Drs Keogh Hosmer and L W Snow attended to the wounded man at I once Dr Snow removed the right eye and Dr Jlosmer amputated the right hand aboe the wrist and the I right leg at the knee CHANCE OF RECOVERY SLIGHT Shortly after 230 oclock the patient recovered from the effects of the an aesthetic and at that time it was im posible to say what his chances for recovery were although the operations had been successfully performed and were the only means of saving his life owing to his awful condition He was doing as well as could be expected at U oVlock last evening but it was Im lOs lhle to say if he would survive the shock Lindstrom has a family In the old country and a daughter living at Bing ham a Mrs Peterson whose husband fell down u shaft at the Highland Boy about two years ago and was killed Mrs Peterson was called and was with her father prior to his departure from the scene of the accident |
