Show Mr Andrew Carnegie recently offered the city of Louisville an endowment of 125000 for a public library the only condition being that the city should guarantee a maintenance fund for the library But the Aldermen are so hostile hos-tile to the Mayor that they would not even consider the proposition ol Mr Carnegie being determined not to levy taxes for any such purpose during the Mayors term of office The reason given Is hardly satisfactory I Mr Carnegie would offer to buy 125000 worth of bulldog pistols and magazine rifles for tho private use of the citizens of Louisville In case the city would I furnish a structure to keep the arms in when they were not in use we suspect the Board of Aldermen would accept with thanks We only judge so by what happened in the Pranfort hotel one day last week I |
