Show Mayor Submits List to Republican Re-publican Caucus GREENEWALD TURNED DOWN Fight was Also Made on Peter Con die who was Named for Supervisor Super-visor of Streets and Irrigation but Second Precinct Councilmen Went to His Rescue and Landed Him Vote Against Greencwald was Unanimous Josiah Lees will Probably Prob-ably Secure the Appointment City Engineer Frank C Kelsey Health Commissioner J C B King Superintendent of Waterworks Frank HInes Supervisor of Streets and Irrigation Peter S Comllo Land and Water Commissioner B Westcrlleld City Sexton Thomas Carter Sealer of Weights and Measures and Oil Inspector W P Neboker Building Inspector F M Ulmer Parkkcepor A Erlckson The above Is the list of appointees which will be presented to the City Council by Mayor Thompson this evening even-ing At the same time the Mayor will name his choice for Sanitary Inspector and In orden to prevent any misunderstanding misunder-standing that might otherwise arise will probably name Chief of Police Hilton Hil-ton and Fire Chief Devine as their own successors in the offices which they now hold though it is believed that under un-der the law reappointment is not necessary neces-sary APPROVED BY MAJORITY The selections as here given are the results of a caucus held by the Mayor and the nine Republican members of the Council last evening It was argued In the beginning that the Mayor should submit his choice for the various appointive offices and that the Republican members should pass upon them After the caucus had been called to order the Mayor presented the entire list as given above with the addition of J J Grcenewald for Sanitary Inspector In-spector The first name on the list that of F C Kelsey was promptly approved by a unanimous vote as was also Dr King for Health Commissioner GREENEWALD REJECTED Next in order was J J Greenewald for Sanitary Inspector and to the surprise sur-prise of a number of the CouncIlmen ns well as the Mayor Jake was rejected reject-ed by a unanimous vote This action was taken without discussion but It Is I learned that very strong pressure had been brought to bear from various quarters Certain Ice dealers and their I friends opposed Greenewald because of his action in condemning a large amount of ice during his former Incumbency Incum-bency of the ofllce and various saloon men who were affected by l his decision at that time had Joined in the fight Another element opposed him because ho operated slot machines at Saltalr last summer and many of his own people Joined In the general protest against his appointment for various reasonsTROUBLE TROUBLE OVER CONDIE When Greenewald has been effectually effectual-ly disposed of the name of Peter S Condle was brought up and Mr Condle was turned down by a vole of five to four those voting for him being Whlttemore Canning Cottrell and Hewlett This action both surprised and angered an-gered the Second precinct members and they promptly notified the majority ma-jority that if Condlo was to be turned down they would do a little turning down themselves THOMASS PEACE MEASURE The majority was inclined to resist this action on the part of the minority and some discussion ensued when J J Thomas moved as a peace measure that the appointment of Condlo and all other appointments except Greenewald be approved This motion prevailed by a unanimous vote and settled the en tiro matter Considerable speculation was being Indulged In last night as to who would be named as sanitary Inspector but It is believed by many that Joseph Lees will land the place i SPENCERS MORMONISM In the fight aged by Condie and George Sppncer against each other it Is said that prominent supporters of Condle charged that Spencer was not a Mormon and that he was not entitled to the appointment for that reason in viet of the announced Intention of Mayor Thompson to name a Mormon for street supervisor Spencer secured the signature of President Joseph F Smith and other prominent Mormons to a statement vouching for him and thus dispelled all suspicion of his luke warmncss In the faith Condle how over proved the stronger man In the opinion of the Mayor and secured the coveted position |
