Show ON CASSADH TRAIL Ben Harries Thinks the Outlaw Out-law is in the City OTHERS THINK OTHERWISE Deputy Harries Says Ho is in Touch With a Man Who Promises that Butch Will Surrender Himself if Certain Promises are Jlodc Other Members of the Sheriffs Force Be lieve the Whole Thing is a Pako and that Butch Has Not Seen Salt Lake for Many a Day 1 Deputy Sheriff Ben Harries came forward for-ward yesterday with a story to the effect that Butch Cassadj the notorious notori-ous outlaw was In Salt Lake and anxious to surrender himself should certain promises be made to him According Ac-cording to Mr Harriess story he was approached some time since by a man who said he knew here Butch could be hadand that Butch was willing to give himself up and plead guilty to robbing Paymaster T3 L Carpenter of the Pleasant Valley Coal company in 1S97 if the Governor would promise that Cassady should not be extradited and forced to answer to crimes committed In other States Mr Harries says he had several appointments with the alleged al-leged agent of Cassady and was waiting wait-ing until Gov VYellss return from the East to lay the proposition before the Governor Harries says he had no reason to doubt that his informant who Is a man well known to Harries was telling the truth as the man had j I worked with Cassady for different cow outfits several years ago Mr Harries expressed much regret that the story had become public but stated that he i I had no doubt he would finally get Cu ly to surrender THE JOKE THEORY The other side to the story IB that Mr Harries IB the victim of a joke It is said that Angus M Cannon Jr appeared at Lagoon some nights ago with a man named Burke from Tooele county They met a third friend and had a drink of soda wuler or sonii thing together Leaving Burke and walking awiy with the third man Mr m Cannon said Do you know who that I I was we Just had that drink with Tho r < plv was no and Cunnon then II I Bald That Is Butch Cassady Naturally I Nat-urally the friend was somewhat astonished I as-tonished and it seems a thought occurred II I oc-curred to Angus right there Deputy f Sam Dowse was approached tin next day which was Wednesday by Attorney Attor-ney J M Hamilton who said he could tell where Butch Cnssady was Mr Dowse remarked that U would gladden him to meet Butch Buying in j fact that he would give about 50 to See the outlaw Hamilton did not press the matter further and soon Mr Cannon hove in sight Ho told Mr t Dowse that he could point out Butch 5 i ti Cassady In twenty minutes and would j be happy to Introduce Mr Dowse pro J viJcd the latter would promise to not arrest the outlaw Mr Dowse Intimated Intimat-ed that he did not desire to meet hutch for social reasons und suggested that if he could see Butch he would endeavor en-deavor to null him or words to that effect Hf was then told that Butch would be found but was at that time fifty miles Dom ton Just how it was proposed to cover the llfly miles In twenty minutes was not made clear TitlED IT OX ANOTHER Mr Dov e was then passed up and In a short time Deputy John Montgomery j Mont-gomery was called from the ofHcc to J Identfy a man who was with Cannon and was said to be Butch He didnt look like Butch a little according to Mr Montgomerys conception of that celebrated individual and Mr Montgomery Mont-gomery suggested that somebody was being trilled with Both Dowse and Montgomery believe that Butch Is not In Salt Lake and has not been for sometime some-time and Incline to the belief that somebody was trying to have a little fun with Deputy Harries and at the same time procure a little money to be used for charitable purposes THE SHERIFF SKEPTICAL Sheriff llowells did not know of what had been carrying un until yesterday af let noon the negotiations not having been reported to him He said last night that he did not believe Butch was in Salt Lake The Sheriff seems to think Butch is in a place even hotter If that is possible than Salt Lake for her said he believed Butch was deader than something or other Thu Sheriff said it was rumored that Butch was in Salt Lake about six weeks ago and that ho had put up ills horse in one of time livery stables of the city Tho Sheriff at once took the matter up located the horse supposed to be Butchs and waited for the owner own-er When the man ame In he was observed ob-served lo bear about ns much resem blance to Butch as Butch does to the Queen of Sheba Sheriff Hoells be lieves Butch came lo a timely end in Arizona about two years ago and this view is shared by Matt Warner of Price who knew Butch about as well as anybodv in Utah und used lo hear from the outlaw regularly until about two years ago |
