Show NAUVOO LEGION REUNION ARTILLERYMEN HOLD ANNUAL GATHERING Largo Number of the Veterans and Their Friends Listen to Talks of the Past Enjoyable Programme The veteran artillerymen of the S Nauvoo Legion held their annual reunion re-union at the Thirteenth ward meetinghouse meeting-house last night The building was filled to its capacity with the veterans and their families and a pleasant evening was passed in listening to a programme of speechmaking and music mu-sic D M McAllister presided and the veterans drum corps added life to the occasion by playing patriotic airs Apostle Heher J Grant sang the Holy City and after reciting his progress in singing expressed a high regard for the veterans R T Burton spoke of the early days of the legion which he had Joined in 1S44 saying he could not attempt to rehearse the troubles at Nauvoo He told of crossing the plains the troubles with Indians and referred to the famous prevention of the legion from malting a Fourth of July demonstration demon-stration But he said there was no enmity on our part and there never was a time when we were not ready to lay down our lives for the flag of the United States A singing lesson followed by Prof CST C-ST Thomas and Miss Lucy Grant after which Mrs Maggie Hall sang the Maid o Dundee Adelbert Beesley gave a xylophone solo and Morris Young dressed In female attire sang a solo much to the amusement of his hearers Apostle Brigham Young referred to the fact that his seniors In the legion were becoming scarce and rehearsed a number of experiences in the service of the Government George Margotts and Sidney Clawson dressed In ancient style the latter as a woman gave a comic dialogue song A solo each was then sung by Miss Sarah Patton and H S Godclard and Angus M Cannon made some remarks of a historic nature na-ture Gov Wells gave a short but spirited patriotic talk and spoke of the loyalty of the legion and the Mormon people The Union Glee club gave a selection and the meeting closed with the bene diction by Patriarch John Smith |
