Show c THE END OF THE ROPE 1 The Deseret News last night had an I elaborate review of the Roberts expulsion expul-sion In which It made Its I usual complaint com-plaint about falsehood and misrepresent I misrepre-sent i utlon having been employed I Is careful however not t specify any I alleged misrepresentation i Nor can It 1 do PO as fur as the Ltah opponents of I r nberts are concerned A lull review I t will inako this plain I Just prior to Robertas nomination I the Utah Presbytery In session < at c I Mantl charged that tho law against I polygamous living was Ielng shamefully fully violated In Utah and that as the result many hundreds of polygamous children were being bon The editor of the News replied bitterly abusing the ministers and pretending to deny the truth of their charges And yet the truth of these charges will not be seriously denied now by any uellln formed person v ho is honest Then came the nomination of Roberta Rob-erta The Tribune said that It was forced by high churchmen not for 101 Robertas political standing for he had none but for his subservience to the church TVc speciilcd APostle Hr bcr J Grant as the chief of these church bigots In that work The facts are precisely as we gave them and we have furnished the proof Further I proving we would say that Apostle i Heber J Grant said to n very prominent promi-nent Democrat then and there This Is my slate Roberts for Representative Representa-tive JMcCunc for the Senate and his programme was worked out precisely on those lines Wo said further that Grant proclaimed his defiance of law in I Logan where he said he would go Into polygamy again in spite of the laws 10 If the church leaders told him to and his declaration in the Herald ofllce that his wives had borne him no sons that he would continue to marry till he got mary til a woman who would bear him a son Grunt and the News of course denied this but the declaration was proved by the testimony of one who heard Grant say it and we also gave the name of James IT Moyle chairman of the Slat Democratic committee as that of one of the hearers of Grants lawdefying declaration Then there was no more denial in the News The News has much to say about at temptsto deceive the people but nothing noth-ing more glaring in this line could be imagined than the than Newss course throughout this whole Roberts mater I has persistently i denied that the Roberta Rob-erta light was a church light and yet as the church organ it has made that light I has claimed that It Was solely a political light and et It poltcal 11ht yet I has not let It remain so even last night It likened Robertss light In Jght II Washington for political po-litical preferment to Luthers great light at Wormrf for the frht purpose PUpOS perhaps per-haps of showing what a great politician cian Luther was And even on Thurs day night it proclaimed In glaring headlines the probability of the 1robabll passage pas-sage of the Lacey amendment which was merely another sample of Its dishonest dis-honest and misleading reports All o which shows what a depraved shift epnwc shifty rascally paper the News Is under Its present editorial ediollal management And after all Its vile crooked is vfe contemptible con-temptible course the News has the unmitigated un-mitigated gall to bewail the misleadIng mislead-Ing of the people when its sole Is apparent ap-parent object has hen to misled the people of Utah to speak of those who lash the people into fury as design ing persons who lead them to rapine arson and murder when the only paper In Utah that has ever tried that Is tho Deseret News to arouse the people to reckless enthusiasm hero worship and boundless adulation when itself alono has done that and Is constantly try InS It In behalf oi unworthy persons If only they can cloak themselves In the church garb But the News finally assures the lnal public pub-lic that no practical polygamist will bo likely hereafter to offer himself for a national public ofllce I Is very late in reaching this conclusion it would have done far betel and Would have served Its people in n much higher degree de-gree if It had told them this from thn first of Statehood The Tribune Invited it to do so it refused and contumaciously contuma-ciously tried to override the public pUblc sentiment sen-timent of the country the plan being to see how far the reacllonarios 0111 go in cramming polygamy down the throats of tho American people to find out whether the country way In earnest In requiring that polygamy be given uj > The course of bad faith falsehood Impudence and bigoted fanaticism ha has been pursued to its ul timalo rebuff reckless of the degrada lon and shame heaped upon Utah by that course and now the zealots proclaim pro-claim that they will quit so far as the i Nation Us concerned They had better II have taken good advice In the first place they had better take good advice I ad-vice now and drop the thl pursuit of pledgebreaking not alone with the Na lon bu t with the State |
