Show THE CAUCUS Way or May Not Settle Sena torship Tonight EVIDENCE OFSNOWS WISH Three Legislators Say That the Church President Told Them Ho Personally Desired Election of Thomas Kcanis Kenrns Says He Has No Knowledge of Any Influence Influ-ence Arthur Brown Makes a Correction Cor-rection Has Ho Deal With Mc Cornick Politicians Restless There was n considerable cloud upon the Senatorial horizon yesterday and a restless movement among the campaigners cam-paigners which indicated the approach of a storm The fact that the day was the Sabbath did not lessen the activity of the workers and the labor performed was chiefly in the wUy of preparation for any disturbance which might burst upon the caucus tonight Fortunately Fortunate-ly for their peace of mind several of the legislators had lied from the capital cap-ital and were safely housed in their own homes Others left the city on pleasure bent throe of these Cutler Larson and Holmgren going to Park City to sec the Silver King mine and to dine at Iho Silver King boardinghouse boarding-house The members who stayed in the city including those who live here were kept busy One of them was called upon before breakfast and a carriage drew up at his door during dinner and there were calls In between to say nothing of the extra service demanded of hi telephone The calls personal and by phone had to do with the Sen atorshlp and the member is said to bethinking be-thinking The candidates are thinking and the workers are thinking Alto i gethcr the developments of the day seemed conducive to deep thought and tho reasoning process may develop some startling things CHURCH DEAL ABSORBING The talk of the day In and out of the camps of politicians revolved about The Tribunes publication yesterday morning of the story of the deal whereby where-by Tom Kearns was to be elected Senator Sen-ator from Utah with the assistance of tho Mormon church Of course there were two sides to the discussion ICcarns and those personally interested in his candidacy and the people who always deny church influence in pot itics denied the truth of The Tribunes statement but the mass of people including in-cluding politicians of prominence declared de-clared their belief In the charge while deploring that Ic was so STATEMENT OF KEARNS A Tribune reporter called upon Mr Kearns at his headquarters not with an Idea of hearing him corroborate the story In detail but rather to learn what manner of denial he wanted to present to the nubile Mr Kearns has often been Interviewed by The Tribune and admitted he had never been misquoted but he seemed to fear that his words might in this case be twisted into an admission of the facts Therefore the reporter took down what he had to say and submitted It to him for approval His statement follows I have been misrepresented by The Salt Lake Tribune Trib-une I do not care about being interviewed inter-viewed any further at the present time for fear they would misquote mo for I believe from the article in the paper this morning that the paper Is not friendly I i know nothing of any church I influence being exerted In my behnlf and I deny that either Mr R C Ker ens or Senator W A Clark Have en deavored to purchase aSenatorship for me POSITION OP BROWN ExSenator Brown considered that he had been misrepresented by the statement which The Tribune said came from one of his workers to the effect that there had been a conference wherein It was agreed that Kearns must be defeated even If Browns sup porters went to McCornlck Mr Brown sent for a Tribune reporter and said to him that there was no deal between him and McCornlek that there had never been any talk about It and that anything which implies it Is a mis take lie also said that there hud r been no conference between himself and his supporters and that jf they had agreed to go to McCornlck it was vvthout his knowledge or his sanction Mr Brown says too that he did call at the church oflices on Friday but hla business was with an employee and I not with the Presidency The Tribune did not Intend to mis represent Mr i Brown The information vas the substance of statements of Alma Katz who said that Mr Browns five supporters had called and agreed to slay with him against Kearns or to vote as he suggested Mr Kaf said that McCornick having the most votes should receive the support The paper did not use the name of its Informant but inasmuch as the correction ia made it must do so lion PRESIDENT SNOWS PART Evidence against the attitude of President Snow wan cumulative Throe Republican members of the Legislature said that the President had sent for them and had discussed the Senatorial proposition making his wishes known Jlc told them that the church was not instructing them but that he person ally desired the election of Mr ICcarna Coming thus direct the evidence Is proof but in spite of it some professed yesterday that they had not even heard of the President expressing his personal VrlSh The situation is expected to develop at tonights caucus There iu a division pf opinion as to what the outcome will be Some authorities assert that there will be I choice no made Others say that a Senator Is sure to be mimed It has been said that the plans of the Kearng men were being laid to slay immediate action in order that a too rapidgain in votes would not be point ed to as1 proof of the Influence charged It has been said on the contrary that the KearnH supporter would strive for a nomination tonight for fear delay might bring u break In their ranks On the outside the concensus of opinion particularly among Republicans who regret that the party has been brought Into such a mess Is in favor of an In > mediate Pcltlement of the question whichever way it must go These nc publlcanK feel that If the deal Is carried car-ried through the party will be din graced and permanently injured |
