Show REDUCING WAR 1AXES i 1 II 1 Senate Committee on Finance Working Hard 3 1 to Complete Consideration of the i 11 I K Revenue Reduction Bill 1 i 11 ProposedGuLWill Be a Much Greater Total Than J Waf Made I c by the Bill as Passed the House but It Will Differently I DistributedTobacco Tax Will Be Reduced Frorml9to9 Cents U II I < I Beer Tax Will Probably Not Be Changed J tJ > 5 f I Washington Jan 2C1Tha Senate Finance committee was in session the greater part of today making an effort ef-fort to complete consideration of the war revenue reduction bill lu order to be able to present Its report tomorrow It did not succeed but the work was so nearly completed that ItIJ believed one or two more meetings will sufllca for that purpose There arc still many Items of the bill which have not been finally passed upon but all of them have bcen PO completely canvassed that there will not bo great difficulty in reaching n conclusion The committee Is still withholding official announcement of its proceedings proceed-ings from the public but some facts concerning its I conclusions are known It is i not probable that there will be avery a-very much greater total reduction than was made by the bill l as it passed the house but the reduction will be differently distributed The moat important conclusion reached is f to reduce from If to 9 cents the tax on tobacco There is also to bu a reduction of the lax on cigars I and snuff The House left all these articles ar-ticles untouched The Senate committees dccison ns to those article1 will educe i the revenue receipts about 10000000 This reduction reduc-tion will bo made up by declining tu accept all the House reductions Consequently Con-sequently all the articles from which the House took oft all the tax will be given half the former rate by the Senate Sen-ate committee ft It is i probable that on proprietary articles ar-ticles the formula of which is public the tax will be entirely l removed whllo upon those the formula of which it i secret se-cret It will be retained entirely The ti on steamship tickets will be reduced re-duced The lax on steerage tickets will be removed entirely The tax on stock transforo nobably will IIP continued con-tinued on the par value of the shares as at present but this matter has not boon definitely passed upon The members mem-bers of the committee express the opinion opin-ion that to place the tax upon the selling value of stools would bean Invitation to fraud The beer tax has been discussed at considerable length but no absolute decision has been reached The present pres-ent tendency is to leave the rate as fixed by the House Tho tax on telegrams also remains undecided Some of the members oC the committee have made an effort to luuo the law amended so as to reduce the tax to a halfcent per message but to make the telegraph companies pay It This proposition has not been accepted in its entirety but the reduction re-duction eeems probable The form of tho bill will be altered material I |
