I fflflf 2135 150. 10 EAST SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH FRIDAY, APRIL 20, 1962 - Montana's Senator Metcalf Will Address J-- J Banquet Saturday Montana Senator Lee Metcalf will be main speaker Saturday night at the annual Democratic Jefferson-Jackso- n Day Dinner at the Terrace Ballroom, 464 South Main. The speaker was announced by William G. Fowler, banquet chairman. Others expected to attend in-clude Sen. Alan Bible, Democrat of Nevada; Sen. Oren E. Long, Democrat of Hawaii; and Sen. Frank E. Moss, Utah Democrat. Sen. Metcalf previously served four terms in the House from his state and was a member of the Montana Supreme Court. FRANK WILKINS 1 Utah Democrats conduct their organization convention Satur-day at the Terrace Ball Room with only one contest in sight. The lone contest is for the posjof state vice chairman. Can-dify- s are incumbent Mrs. and Norma Andrea- - son. Thus far only Stephen P. Smoot, immediate past chair-man of the Salt Lake County Democratic organization has an-nounced candidacy for the state chairman post. Incumbent D. Frank Wilkins is not expected to seek reelection. The convention gets under way with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. State Chairman Wilkins will call the convention to order at 9 a.m. and invocation will be offered by the Rev. Lawrence R. Spellen. Singing of the National An-them will be led by Delmont Truman accompanied by Ross Hurst. Mayor William A. Bar-- , locker of St. George will lead1 the convention in the pledge of allegiance. Reading of the convention call will be by Donald B. Hol-broo- k, state executive secretary and delegates will be welcomed by Mr. Wilkins. Introduction of and reports by state officers is scheduled next. Temporary officers will be in-troduced and the following com-mittee chairmen will report: Frank Memmott, . Rules and Or-der of Business; Ray Pruett, Cre-dentials; Jacob Weiler, Elec-tions; Lyman Smart, Pre-Plat-for- m and Resolutions. Ross Hurst will present piano selections, after which nomina-tions x and responses by candi-dates for state chairman and vice chairman are planned. Democratic National Commit-- i i Sagebrush Club Honors Two S.L. Democrats Two long time Democrats, G. Gill Sweeten and Mrs. Rema Loomis, received special recog-nition awards Thursday night at a meeting of the Sagebrush Club in the City Commission cham-bers. Speaker at the club's April meeting was Francis L. Urry, radio and television personality. Refreshments' were served by women directors of the club. Cliff Cockayne Voices Candidacy For Reelection to Assessor Post i ' the assessor said: "If I am re-elected I will continue to give careful study and intimate con-sideration to any and all prob-lems that may arise and conduct the office for the benefit and convenience of the people of the county. "The office of county assessor carries great responsibility. I feel that my background and ex-perience qualifies me for this responsibility. "I have a well trained staff of employees who are putting forth every effort to make the asses-sor's job a continued success. Mr. Cockayne has resided in Salt Lake City for the past 36 years. He was educated in the LDS Business College and the University of Utah and has had extensive business experience. He is a past president of the Utah State Association of County Assessors, an executive board member of the State Association of County Officials and is active in church and civic work. He is a life-lon- g member of the Democratic party. He has served as a county organization officer from the voting district level to the county chairman. S. C. (CLIFF) COCKAYNE Salt Lake County Assessor S. C. (Cliff) Cockayne this week announced he would seek and reelection on the Democratic ticket. Mr. Cockayne is serving his first term in the county office. In his announcement statement Candidate Withdraws From Senate Race Mrs. Lowell M. (Betty) Dur-ham, who had announced her candidacy for the nomination for the Utah Senate on the Demo-cratic ticket, this week said she was withdrawing. Mrs. Durham, in a letter to Wayne Carlson, Salt Lake county chairman, said that "unforeseen circumstances which have de-veloped in the weeks following my announcement" have made the withdrawal necessary. She thanked persons who had supported her. Count Surveyor Roscoe Boden Will Run for Reelection in '62 gaged in construction work for I contracting firms and railroads. In his announcement Mr. Bo-den said one of his first projects, if reelected, would be to move from the planning to the con-struction stage of a long overdue county storm sewer system. "During my years as county engineer and surveyor I have tried to be fair with the sub-divid- er, the contractor and the home buyer. I believe we have an obligation to all parties in such matters," he said. ROSCOE BODEN Roscoe Boden, incumbent Salt. Lake County Surveyor, this week announced he would seek return to the office on the Demo-cratic slate. Mr. Boden, now serving his second term in the position, is a former member of the Salt Lake County Commission, where he served for eight years. He also is a former state Democratic chairman. For many years he was en- - Mrs. C. L Jack Seeks Nomination For Salt Lake County Recorder , Mrs. C. L. (Nellie) Jack, in-cumbent Salt Lake County Re-corder, announced her candi-didac- y today for renomination and on on the Demo-cratic ticket. She is now serving her first term in this office and is the only woman now serving as an elected official of the Salt Lake County organization. Mrs. Jack is a life-lon- g Demo-crat and has worked untiringly for the principles of her party. She has been elected several times to the Utah House of Rep-resentatives and the State Sen-ate, where she served the people with honor and credit, during which time she gained a good knowledge of affairs of state.
