Show Utah National Guard Names 1961 "Miss" Curvaceous Karen Seely, 19-year-old beauty from Brigham City, is the Miss Utah National Guard for 1961. She was selected over 20 lovelies love-lies during a day-long pageant in Salt Lake City. The queen contest, one of the most popular in the state, climaxed the week long Muster Day activities. The Weber College sophomore entered the contest as Miss Lay-ton Lay-ton and represented Battery A, 222nd Artillery of the Utah National Na-tional Guard. Two other levelies as Miss Seely's attendants. . They are Verna Redd, 22, Cananea, Sonora Mexico and Dawn Marie Grow, 18, Bountiful. It was "lucky 13" for the new queen as her appearance number was 13. Her talent was a dance number. Carolyn Lasater, Salt Lake, Miss Utah National Guard for 1960, presented the royal crown and cape to the new queen. Miss Seely also received a trophy, a 3 piece matched luggage set, a $150 wardrobe, and a bouquet of roses. Her main prize is an all-expense all-expense paid tour of Washington D.C. for 8 days as guest of the Utah Congressional delegation, and the Utah National Guard, where she will be the Princess from Utah in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Miss Redd, whose talent was an art display, is a senior at BYU. She was named first attendant at-tendant and entered the pageant as Miss Springville, representing the 116th Engineer Light Equipment Equip-ment Co. Miss Grow is a petite student at Bountiful High School. She was Miss Independence and represented rep-resented the 10 special troops units of Army National Guard in Salt Lake City and Bountiful. The colorful Pageant opened with a welcoming address by Brig. General Maurice L. Watts. Then the girls were interviewed by the judges and had lunch. Then they were judged in bathing bath-ing suits, judged by the talent committee and finally judged in evening dresses. |
