Show I . t I Page Two FRIDAYJANUARY 20, 1961 THE SALT LAKE TIMES Utah Medical Assn. Discusses Rural Care A program for improving and providing the best possible medi-cal service for rural areas of Utah was discussed at a meeting this week by leaders of the Utah Medical Association and repre-sentatives of the American Medi-cal Association Rural Health Council. The discussion was a prelimi-nary to an eight state Western Division convention on rural health that will be held in Salt Lake City on May 5 and 6, ac-cording to Harold Bowman, ex-ecutive secretary of the Utah Medical Association. The west-ern convention will be open to all individuals or groups inter-ested in rural health problems. The meetings, in addition to seeking general improvement of medical care in the rural areas, will attempt to answer the prob-lems of community immuniza-tion, farm accidents, placement; of doctors to take care of sparses areas, improvement of facilities and many other problems. A medical forum is planned at the western division meeting to give evryone a chance to discuss problems and receive answers. Dr. Wallace S. Brooke, presi-dent of the Utah Medical Assn., and Harold Bowman, executive secretary, will work with R. W. Farsnworth of Cedar City, who is the Utah Representative on the National Council of the AMA for Rural Health, in setting up local plans and arrangements for the western conference. Utah Trudeau Society Publishes Guide The publication of the Utah Trudeau Society of a guide for the management of tuberculosis contacts was announced this week by Dr. John D. Newton of Ogden, president. The Trudeau Society, an or-ganization of physicians interest-ed in chest disease is the medical section of the Utah Tuberculosis and Health Association. "The proper management of those who have been in close contact with a case of tubercu-losis is perhaps the most impor-tant single aspect of preventing the spread of tuberculosis. There-fore, the recommendations pre-pared for physicians and health department workers should be-come standard procedure." The guide, a Christmas Seal publication, was prepared by a committee of the Utah Trudeau Society headed by Dr. William Harris, now of the Pennsylvania Womens' Medical College, Phila-delphia. For two years the com-- mittee studied the subject, sought opinions from local leaders and national experts, and obtained approval of key state agencies. The guide has been endorsed by the Utah State Medical Assn., the Utah State Health Depart-ment, the Utah Public Health Association and the Utah Tuber-culosis and Health Assn. "Originally the Salt Lake City Health Department requested the Trudeau Society to make contact management recommendations for their use. It was evident, however, that the guide is the most up-to-da- te and best pre-nare- d rmblication available, sn it is being distributed to all health departments and physi-cians in Utah," said Dr. Newton. The guide gives information on how to manage infant and child contacts as well as adult contacts of TB cases. "It is evident that contact management is not at Its best in Utah. Three-fourth- s of the newly discovered TB cases in the state are in an advanced stage of the disease. Early detection and close supervision of contacts can avoid this breakdown in public pro-tection." The guide strongly recom-mends that infants and children under three years of age who are tuberculin positive be given prophylactic treatment for tu-berculosis even though clinical, radiological and bacteriological findings may be negative. The guide notes that the high-est risk of getting tuberculosis is in the first few months after contact. It, therefore, calls for retesting tuberculin negative contacts after contact is broken and frequent of tuber-culin positive contacts in order to detect the disease at a very early time when treatment will be most effective. scribed as follows, to-w- it: "All of Lot 3, Block 1, YALE PARK, Plat "A", Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, State of Utah."
