King Reports Decrease in Federal Tax Bite Despite the rising costs of de-fense, the relative tax burden is no greater today than it was eight years ago, and the relative federal tax burden has decreased slightly over this period. So declared Rep. David S. King of Utah Friday afternoon in a speech to the Sugar House Jay-cee- s. Treasury Department statistics show that the share of the gross national product spent for de-fense and other costs of federal government was 19 per cent last year, as compared with 17.6 per cent 15 years ago and 20.6 per cent eight years ago. "This demonstrates the ability of this nation to maintain a strong defense and at the same time carry out reclamation, water pol-lution control and other pro-grams which increase our over-all national power, within the framework of a balanced budget and without crippling our free enterprise system. "I emphasize again that this Congress has balanced the bud-get, and that federal operations for the last fiscal year produced a $1.1 billion surplus. "I also reiterate my complete faith in the ability of the free enterprise system to outstrip and out-la- st the communist system without sacrificing any of our basic American values," he said. "Although the costs of state and local government have been rising steadily, the overall tax burden, as a share of national wealth, is no greater today than it was eight years ago. "While the costs of state and local government as a share of the GNP have risen 2 per cent since 1952, the relative costs of federal government have de-creased by nearly the same per centage, with the results that the over-a- ll relative costs of gov-ernment are no higher today than they were eight years ago." l II if (7(10 Carter, of Kearns, and nearly 2500 accepted by Kennecott's Utah VLLllilV UUVJ his family will have Division since the Suggestion System was n O n more fun when they established about three years ago.
